Paul Wong, 'Hungry Ghosts'

Hungry Ghosts is a five channel video installation that features a mix of Wong's past video and performance works touching on the recurring subject of death. The video installation provides an ephemeral form where interdisciplinary elements from the disparate past are configured with unsettling current issues and produced as a new whole. In Chinese traditional belief, hungry ghosts are those in the spirit world that are cared for by the living. A main principle of ancestor worship involves presenting food, joss paper, and other offerings to hungry ghosts at specific festivals so they will not disrupt the lives of the living. Hungry Ghosts was originally presented at the 2003 Venice Biennial and was installed at Western Front for the LIVE Society Afterparty.
