Karen Jamieson Dance, under the artistic direction of Karen Jamieson, was formed in 1983. Karen has created over 100 original dance works with original scores by over 20 respected Canadian composers, performed in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States. Her work, Sisyphus was named one of the 10 Canadian choreographic masterworks of the 20th century and multi-year projects with the Haida village of Skidegate B.C. and with the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are recognized nationally as groundbreaking in the field of community engaged and cross cultural dance. The Legacy Project is an umbrella program within Karen Jamieson Dance, which has five components that are concerned with the preserving and the passing on of Karen Jamieson’s life’s work. The Legacy Project has been recognized as an important tool: to capture and share a unique and pioneering body of work by one of Canada’s contemporary dance innovators, a vital element in preserving an ephemeral art form, and a potential valuable resource to the greater community. With the generous support from the IK Barber BC History Digitization Program we have been able to preserve important pieces from Karen Jamieson’s dance career. This specific collection of material spans two decades, many choreographic pieces and collaborations with artists from a range of different traditions and disciplines.
