U.S. leaders must heed
Pope’s appeal for peace

“No more war, war never again! Peace, it is peace which must guide the
destinies of people and of all mankind.’ With these stirring words Pope Paul
came to the historic 20th session of the United Nations General Assembly this
week to speak ‘against war, in favor of peace.” Yet while he spoke U.S. planes
and soldiers were bombing and destroying Vietnam towns and villages in the
only major war being waged by a leading power against another country.

versity of Victoria,

The Vancouver teach-in will
discuss the war in Vietnam, for-
eign policy of the major powers,
and Canada’s role in a revolu-
tionary world, Professor Wil-
liam Willmott said the teach-in

hearts. of all men and women
longing for peace, He could not
have delivered his message from
a more appropriate platform —
the U.N, Nor could it have been
delivered in a more appropriate
country — the U.S.A. — whose
rulers have brought the world
close to the brink of war with its
aggression in Vietnam and the
Dominican Republic,

will have a profound influence on
the struggle for peace in the
world:

by justice, by law, by negotiation,
not by war, not by fear or by
deceit,”

“You are expecting us to utter

this sentence, and we are well

aware of its gravity and solem-
nity: Not the ones against the
others, never again, never more!
It was principally for this pur-
pose that the organization of the
United Nations arose: Against
war, in favor of peace!”

“Many words are not needed to
proclaim -this loftiest aim of
your institution, It suffices to
remember that the blood of mil-
lions of men, that numberless
and unheard of sufferings, use-
less slaughter and frightful ruin,
are the sanction of the pact which
unites you, with an oath which
must change the future history of
the world: No more war, war
never again! Peace, it is peace
