Conference Speaking in Clay Speaking of Clay A combined exhibition and conference dealing with contemporary questions in ceramic art and criticism, organized by the Potters Guild of British Columbia, will be held at, and co-sponsored by, the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. "Moving Towards a Critical Stance on_the opippery Ground of Contemporary Glay” will be the topic of tie first day of the Conference. (April II) "Reflection on the Source and Erasi lity ef Clay: The mirroring of Human Mortality” will be addressed on the second day (April IZ) The format on both days of the Conference will be morning lectures followed by an afternoon panel discussion with audience participation. Guest speakers will include: Patricia Bovey - director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Matthew Kangas - Art Critic and Curator from Seattle Russell Keziere - Editor of Vanguard for the past eight years Salley Michener = Ceramic sculptor and Faculty member of Emily Carr College of Art and Desicn Doris Shadbolt = Art Critic and Curator from Varcouver Jack Sures = Ceramic artist and Professor of Art, University of Regina James Thornbury - West Coast artist and Outreach Instructor, Emily Carr College of Art and Design David Zawaduk - West Coast artist and President of the B.C, Potters Guild “On the Show", an informal discussion with Willard Holmes, Gallery Director, Emily Carr College of Art and Design, and selected artists will be fea- tured on the evening of April ll. Billets will be arranced. The exhibition of work in the Charles H, Scott Galleryof the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, from April 3-26 is being organized as the focus of the symposium, It will centre around an investigation of the conmec- tion or affinity between the material, clay, and artistic expression. It will include both manufactured and handmade objects from western and non- western cultures and will range from historical to contemporary works.
