Foot dragging slammed

THE HEALTH ministry is using the transition to its new, more
regionalized system as an excuse 10 stall on decisions, claims
Kilimat-Stikine regional hospital district director Alice Maitland.

Maijland’s comments followed a presentation by Terrace Health
Care society CEO Michael Leisinger, During the course of outlin-
ing what has been achieved so far in preparing a masterplan for
Mills Memorial Hospital, he said the third and final study was on
hold awaiting the go-ahead —- and promise of financial assistance
— from the ministry.

Charging the ministry was dragging its fect, Mailland said it
should ‘‘get on wilh it and stop using this (the transition) as an ex-

She also feared health care projects in the hospital district could
ultimately be torpedoed if they were put on hold until rcorganiza-
tion was completed. In particular, she was concerned about the ef-
fects of redrawing the district’s boundaries to mirror those of the
Skcena health Unit.

That would mean bringing Smithers into the fold, a community
she said had a record of refusing to borrow money to finance
health care projects. Different voters with different ideas could
have an adverse affect on the approach taken by Kitimat-Stikine
to date.
