Need for cash _ to soon TERRACE — The first hints of how shopping will be done in the future are arriving here.” The Terrace and District Credit Union is introducing debit cards. And Safeway is — installing equipment that'll take debit. cards and Mastercard. Debit cards permit a’ pur- chaser to pay directly from a bank account if a business is equipped with a point of. sales computer system. ae The credit union’s debit cards will replace the Cue cards now in use but they can also be used in automated banking machines, said credit union manager Dennis Brewer, “All credit unions in Canada will have cards that look the same across the country so mer- chants will be able to recognize them,’ said Brewer. The estimated 1,200 local credit union members who have Cue cards will get the new ones as their Cue cards expire. Although the credit union Mastercard also acts as an automated bank machine card it can’t also be used as a debit card, said Brewer. That means credit union members will have two cards — a Mastercard and a combined d ° | a Ce debit/bank machine card. The debit card works on the same personal identification number system as does a bank machine card. The purchaser will give the store his or her debit card and in return receive a key pad in which the identification number is recorded. That then allows the purchaser to choose from which bank account payment should be taken. Meanwhile Safeway’s system to take debit cards and Master- card will be installed in all of its western Canada next. month, says company spokesman Don Bell. “We think it’ll be a real con- venience for shoppers,” he said. For now the Safeway system will accept as debit cards only those bank cards connected to the Bank of Montreal system, said Bell. But that will change by fall when Safeway will switch to a system permitting the use of all other debit and bank cards, he ff added. | The Bank of Montreal and Safeway connection is part of a program by which customers can eam points toward airline tickets.
