The race featured 24 boats and was the first overmght race of the season. In the Royal Victoria Yacht Ciub’s Lipton Cup, Sidney’s Mark Frampton skippered his boat, Black Ice, to capture the Division One trophy, which was donated to the RVYC in 1914 by Sir Thomas Lipton. In shooting, Sidney gunsmith Gil Carmichael finished sixth out of 46 marksmen in a World Cup shooting competition in Mexico City. The veteran trap shooter nailed 190 of 200 targets. And, 16-year-old Mark Dyer earned himself the distinction of being the best marksman in the Air, Land and Sea Cadets National Shooting Competition held in Ottawa. Z Dyer, a member of the 676 Kittyhawk Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, hit 583 of 600 targets in the national competition. On the field, Mark Wyatt, cap- tain of Canada’s rugby squad in the 1991 World Cup, hung up his cleats. The Stelly’s School teacher was named Victoria’s male athlete cf the year twice. And in 1990, he set the international record for most points in a single-match, scoring 24 points against Scotland. For the first time ever, two Peninsula ladies field hockey teams were honored as division champions. The Hotel Sidney Hobbits and the Brentwood-based Kapteyns Super Salon team won their respective divisional titles against the Victoria Ravens and Cowichan Cardinals. MAY On the track, Parkland School’s runner Adam Street broke an 18- year-old high school record in the 200-m qualifying heat of the Lower Island Championships. Street posted a time of 21.8 seconds beating the old record of 22 seconds set in 1974. He went on to win the 200-m final and added another victory in the 100-m. Grade 7 girls from North Saa- nich Middle school won their 4 X 100-m relay in the All-School Relays at Centennial Stadium. Samantha Milne, Eryn Ward, Becky Herbert and Carly Hal- penny faced stiff competition as they hung on for gold in the finishing: straight. In weightlifting, Peninsula ath- lete Tracy Walt finished third in the Western Canadian Champion- ships in Kelowna. From her first three starts, the former Canadian rowing team member qualified as a “Canadian competitor.” JUNE In rowing, at the Canadian Secondary Schools’ Champion- ships, Parkland School Grade 11 student Caroline Morris was crowned the High School Singles Women’s Champion while Adam Parfitt teamed up with his younger brother Jonathon to win the Men’s Double Championship. On the track, Peninsula Track and Field Club member Rhonda Robinson made the grade for the Canadian Olympic Trials after a great showing at a meet in Eugene, Oregon. Robinson ran a personal best time of 2.07:7 to take second place in the 800-m and eam a shot at Barcelona. JULY On the ice, 12-year-old Bryce Wednesday, December 30, 1992 — A16 SIDNEY — TheReview McFadden, a star of Peninsula’s major Atoms hockey team, was selected to play for the B.C. Super Series tournament. McFadden made it through six different trials to make the provin- cial team. At the B.C.
