A3 Sidney responds io ‘monster house’ complaint by Paul Wyke The Review The construction of a duplex on the comer of Frost Avenue and Lochside Drive in Sidney is com- pletely out of context with the neighborhood and existing houses, according to local residents. Although the homes, being con- structed by Dell Barr Consultants Ltd., are within current building code restrictions, surrounding resi- dents feel that the project dimin- ishes single-family character of the area. “We have come to the conclu- sion that the only concerns of the Town of Sidney are the increase in - taxes collected from multiple dwellings,” Paul and Diane Shade wrote in a recent letter to council. And the building, which has a Mediterranean style to it, “adversely affects the whole atmosphere of the neighborhood,” resident Eleana Johnson said in her letter to council. But developer Jack Barker explained to council on Monday that restrictions in the current zoning bylaw don’t give develop- ers a choice when it comes to construction and design. “It seems we're looking at zon- Passenger-side hit/run damage An eastbound vehicle side- Swiped a parked Dodge Omni in the 2300-block Henry Avenue about 11 p.m. Nov. 13, causing about $1,000 damage, Sidney RCMP said. I’d love to build on one level but site coverage restrictions won't allow me to,” Barker told council. “It seems the priorities of a quick-buck developer outweigh those of the taxpayer. If you con- tinue to bow to profit-crazed deve- lopers, Sidney’s character will be destroyed,” she wrote. Sidney council can amend the zoning bylaw for future develop- ments, but the permit for construc- tion of the project has already been issued and obviously can’t be revoked, building inspector Alan Cameron said. - The mayor and council seem to have forgotten their election prom- is€ tO maintain existing commun- ity images in Sidney, according to Johnson’s letter. Some residents voiced their dis- ! * content about losing water views to the duplex development. “Some of the residents have . legitimate concems on the project. But those complaining about lost water views should have bought property on the water,” Cameron said. At a cost of $65 per square-foot, construction for the 4,000-square- foot duplex is estimated at $220,000, Cameron said. Once completed, the units are expected to be listed at around the $350,000 mark, Barker said. At a meeting on Monday, Coun. Don Amos made a motion to refer the current zoning bylaw to staff for Teview with a provision that a 35 per cent site coverage be seri- ously considered. The motion passed unani- mously.
