News Welsh enjoy taste of Peninsula life by Paul Wyke The Review. “Amser da neulldiol gyda phawb.” Or in English, “A great time was had by all” at a gathering last Wednesday in Sidney at the Masonic Temple. A group of 76 Welsh people arrived in two bus loads to enjoy a memorable night of visiting and culture preservation with Welsh- Canadian residents of the Saanich Peninsula. Preparations for the fun-filled evening were organized by Sidney resident and Welsh-Canadian Yvonne Evans. And everything went off without a hitch, Evans said Thursday. “Everybody was thrilled with the whole thing. It really worked Out extremely well,”she said. The tour group’ ventured onto Vancouver Island for the last three days of a two-week sightseeing tour of Western Canada. Stops along the way for the group included Banff, Jasper, Whistler and Vancouver. And though first-hand experi- ences, meetings with Welsh emi- grants and snapshots of beautiful B.C. scenery will remain as color- ful memories, the group were also able to take a record of their tip to Canada back to their home coun- ty. Among the tour group was BBC radio presenter Sulwyn Thomas, a sound man and BBC producer Geraint Evans. The three interviewed many CHATIING UP A STORM. Welsh-Canadians during their two- week journey, and also taped sev- eral emotional reunions. “Tt really showed us that we have relations all over the world. It was quite a magical trip,” Thomas told The Review from a Victoria hotel room Thursday. The interviews from the trip are scheduled to be refined for five one-hour documentaries on the preservation of the Welsh culture in Canada. Two years ago, another Welsh group experienced a similar trip to eastern Canada, and the BBC team PAUL WYKE photo also did a radio series on that trip. But Thomas found the trip to the west a lot more intriguing. “The whole trip has been very dramatic. It seems the west had a lot more to offer than our last trip,’ Thomas recalled. The tour group retumed to the southeastern Gaul on Friday with the realization that the preserva- tion of their language and culture will continue to exist for a long time to come in western Canada.
