Business A local company is riding a wave of enthusiasm into a new market following the successful sea trials last week of a pre- fabricated fire boat constructed in Sidney. CQAE on Mills Road was estab- lished in April 1990 as a custom manufacturing company specializ- ing in custom fabrication for the aeronautics industry. But a new project has shifted the company’s focus from the air to the sea. Earlier this year the company was awarded a contract to con- struct the hulls and decks for five firefighting boats to serve in Van- couver’s Inner Harbour. Designed by Vancouver naval architect Robert Allan, the alu- minum boats had to be cut to exact specifications, so the craft could be quickly assembled at a ship- yard. CQAC manager Rolf Bjornert said he appreciated the chance to work on one of Allan’s projects. “He’s one of the most success- ful naval architects in Canada.” Allan’s credits include everything from ice-breakers used in the Beaufort Sea to a high speed .CMP vessel. Using computerized equipment, CQAC fabricated the sections for the first fireboat. The pieces were then shipped to a Vancouver ship- yard, where the finished craft was completed within a month. “They assembled the whole thing like a Lego kit,” Bjornert said. “We put together a build-by- numbers kat for the shipyard.” The completed fireboat sailed through its sea trials last week, TheReview Wednesday, August 26, 1992 — A23 Company launches pre-fab boats THE SLEEK LINES of a scale model aluminum work boat are examined by John Begg of North Saanich, who works for C@AC, the Custom manufacturing company building the craft. achieving a speed five knots faster than expected.
