Gardening TheReview Wednesday, August 26, 1992 — A18 Soda and soap repulse fungus Some really good news for owners of plants having “fungus altacks” i.e., begonias, squashes, delphiniums, zinnias, etc. That mixture of baking soda, water, and a few drops of detergent really seems to do the trick. It was a marvel on the Zinnias and the squash leaves, but it hasn’t been as effective on our roses as I had hoped it would be. This is likely my own fault. I have allowed other things to inter- fere with my so-called “spray program”’, and by the time I do get to it, the black spot is rampant. I’m on the verge of tears, and making ugly resolutions to get rid of the whole rose bed and plant grass instead. - A friend tells me that the Best of blooms neni: A BONSAI BEAUTY, dis-. played at the annucal! gar- den show. A mass of color transformed Sanscha Hall into a garden for the 38th Annual Sidney and Saanich Peninsula Garden Club Flower Show last weekend. Adding to the color were the rosettes which adorned the best of the plant, produce, arrangement and flower entries. Kerry and Susan Williams swept the classes, taking top aggregate points in both the open and novice classes. In the arrangements and design classes, Dora Field won the open category and Phyllis Gaskell won in Novice. For gladioli, Barry Willoughby won the open category. Kerry and Susan Williams won novice. Wally Watson captured the prize for chrysanthemums and also won the open class for roses. Garry Brust won the novice class for roses. Among the dahlias, those from Kerry and Susan Williams’ garden won the open class, and Stephen Evans captured top honors in nov- Ice. For miscellaneous flowers, Nor- man Stallard came first. Joy Flint won first prize for potted plants. Highest aggregate score for veg- elables was received by Harry Potter. Joan Marsh collected the highest aggregate points in fruits. (DR. You probably have to do it on a regular basis, though, not using my hit-or-miss technique. To-day “himself” and I are attempting to get a few entries ready for to-morrow’s garden show. He has some rather marvelous rhubarb, and some fine filbert nuts, and a dahlia or two that look pretty nice, if he can bring himself to exhibit them. Surveying the successes and failures of this year’s garden, I have decided that next spring we will grow a lot more green peas, since these are hard to find and usually somewhat elderly, and expensive to buy in the stores. We will grow broad beans for the same reasons, but give up on the corm which, although delecta- ble, takes up an awesome amount of room for the number of ears we harvest. Also it all ripens at once, so it is first ““feast” and then, all too soon, “over-ripe”. Unless the corn is Super tender “himself” tums up his magnificent nose, and says “No corm for me, please.” : This is said, without fail, after its already been cooked! The dog 1s moderately interested in the EXCEss Com, especially if it’s been buttered, but tends to carry a cob around for ages, worrying about whether he is supposed to eat it, bury it, or just hide it under the beans! We will plant impatiens, lots and lots of it. What a satisfactory grower it is, blooming endlessly, and, bless its heart, it dead-heads itself, and this even in almost complete shade. We will also give up on lavatera in pols...it gets ridiculously tall, is enchantingly beautiful for ten days, but then spends the next month in a gradual unattractive decline. Instead I’d like to try fibrous begonias in some pots. These have been delightful this summer, both in sun and in shade...we just didn’t have enough of them. We are going to have to give up on sweet-peas, much as we love them. There seems to be a fungus disease in our soil, even in a newly-made bed, that sends them The dog is moderately interested in the excess corn, especially if it’s been buffered’ into a decline just when they should be at their best. Sad! Hey! This begins to sound rather unhappy, doesn’t it? NOT true, most of the garden has been won- derfully successful. The odd fail- ure just keeps me on my toes!
