Central Saanich Days Slo-Pitch
Tournament organized by the Cen-
tral Saanich Lions Club drew 44
teams in three divisions.

Topping the competitive divi-
Siuu was Sports Trade Mall, who
defeated Pimlott’s Sporting Goods
4-3 in the final match played
holiday Monday.

A total of 12 teams played over
four days in the competitive divi-
sion.

In the mixed division, which
drew six teams, Sidney’s Magic
Colour came out on top, defeating
Beacon Auto Parts 8-1 in the final
game.

And in the master’s division,
which drew an outstanding total of
24 teams, it was Oxy Pub from
Nanaimo taking top honors with
an 8-2 upset over Harvey’s Sport-
ing Goods from Sidney.

Tournament organizer Ray Mott
said the four-day tournament,
which started Friday, ““went
extremely well.”

Five ball diamonds were used at
Centennial Park, including one
across Wallace Drive.

Both masters and competitive
divisions played in a double-
knockout format with at least three
games guaranteed to each team.

Mixed division teams played in
a modified round robin format.

Capturing recognition as the
oldest player of the event was Stan
Gill, 61, a catcher with the Victor-
ia Sherwoods.

And the most sportsmanlike
team in the masters division was
the Northgate Labatt’s Blue team
from Nanaimo.

With a total of 44 teams,
hundreds of players participated in
the well-known annual tournament
organized by Central Saanich
Lions Club members.

Thornber wins
3,000-m title
in Saskatoon

The Peninsula Track and Field
Club’s Sarah Thornber success-

fully defended her 3,000-m title at.

the Western Canadian Juvenile
Championships this weekend in
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Sixteen-year-old Thornber won
the event last year and repeated the
feat with a 10.16-minute final on
Sunday.

In the 1,500-m Thornber ran
4.48 minutes to finish third.

As a result of her efforts, Thom-
ber qualified for the Canadian
Juvenile Track and Field Champi-
onships Aug. 14 to 18 in Calgary.

The Peninsula athlete competes
with the Parkland School track
team during the school athletics
season.
