The camps for boys and girls eight to 14 are designed to be fun and accommodate players of all skill levels, she said. “If they’ve never held a racquet in their hand they’Il certainly leam the basics,’’said Beattie, adding that racquets will be provided for those who don’t have their own. Taught by Rod Coligado and Al Boraston, the first four camps in FILE photo in tennis camp July attracted the maximum of 16 participants each. The camps run daily Rom 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with 22 hours of instruction in the tennis bubble and on the centre’s two outdoor courts. There will also be a one- hour daily swim and videos. _ The camps cost $96 for the week ($77 for the holiday shor- tened week of Aug. 4 to 7) plus a 30 per cent surcharge for Central Saanich residents. Registration takes place from 7 to 9 pm. August 4, 12 and 20. The Peninsula Minor Hockey Association said its expecting a heavy turn-out on August 4 when registration is on the arena surface. Last season they had 361 players from 5 to 17-years-old playing in the six divisions: Midget, Bantam, Pee Wee, Atom, Novice and Pea- nuts, said hockey association Pres- ident Doug Saville. Rep team tryout times will be posted during registration, he said. Rotary sponsors student exchanges The highlight of the Sidney Rotary Club’s July 15 meeting was a talk by Tosco Kniesse, a visitor from Bad Laasphe near Frankfurt in Central Germany. Bad Laasphe is a town not far from the old East Germany and the Berlin Wall, which formerly separated the now United Germany. Tosco is a Rotary Exchange student who has been spending two weeks at the home of Brandie Herrick in Sidney. Herrick is a Parkland School student who will soon be leaving for a month on a Rotary Exchange program at Tosco’s home in Bad Laasphe. Tosco has mastered English well for a teenager and delighted Sid- ney Rotarians with a slide presen tation on her home, family and village in Germany. Presently Sidney Rotary has five students on summer exchange pro- grams with students leaving one month and a reciprocal return planned for the following month. Herrick will visit Germany, Steve Sekulich will travel to Finland, Jocelyn Schultz is going to Munich, Tracey Floor is travel- ling to Munich and Amy Woods will visit the Netherlands. Also, on a one-year exchange, 16-year-old Antoni Korte is com- ing from Germany. He will be on the Peninsula beginning August 16 and his first host family will be Ken and Bev Stevenson. The budget for this program is estimated at a maximum $3,000. > <4 aah Janice Hanan of the Piranhas _ Swim Club was the top swimmer in her division at a meet in Coquitlam this weekend. Hanan won the Division 5 girls aggregate, for 14 and 15-year-olds, as the best overall swimmer in her division at the Coquitlam “A” Invitational Meet. Hanan garnered 27.5 of a possi- ble 36 points, a swim club press release said. Thirty-two Piranhas competed in the meet, a warm-up for the Vancouver Island Regionals next month at Victoria’s Crystal Pool. In Warriors lacrosse fundraising for national tournament in Alberia The Peninsula Warriors Midget Lacrosse team needs to raise $6,000 so they can play in a hational tournament in Edmonton next week, says coach Ron Ashley. The team, consisting of players 14 to 16-years-old, has been invited to the Canadian National Lacrosse Tournament Aug. 4-9 in Edmonton.
