80th Anniversary _ ™eReview Wednesday, July 29,1992 — 3 “Many changes to newspaper in almost 80 years Numerous changes have taken place since the first issue of The Review rolled off the presses in time to hit the streets of Sidney, the Saanich Peninsula and the Gulf Islands on Dec. 13, 1912. However, one constant has always remained. The Saanich Fair was a thriving institution long before the newspaper began and it has been a major event on the Peninsula ever since. Bom through the efforts of busi- nessmen in Sidney and the sur- rounding area, The Review has @ &xperienced changes in ownership and changes in staff over the years. Some, like Hugh McIntyre, who bought the paper in November, 1924, have shown a desire to see the Saanich Peninsula expand. His first issue of The Review was Nov. 6, 1924 and on Nov. 13, 1924 he had a full-page advertisement for Sidney as an industrial centre. In the early months of 1929 Mcintyre was devoting two col- umns of the front page to articles boosting Sidney as an industrial centre. In August, 1926, McIntyre changed the name of the paper. It had always been “‘Sidney and Islands Review,” with “and Saa- nich Gazette” tacked on sometime in the period from 1916 to 1919. McIntyre called it the “Saanich Peninsula and Gulf Islands Review’’ and announced that it would cover news of Brentwood Bay and Royal Oak. McIntyre published the paper for more than 20 years, selling it in September, 1944. His successor, ECE. (Fred) Ford stayed only five years, before selling due to ill health to the second long-term owner of The Review, J.
