News TheReview Wednesday, July 22,1992 — A13_— = Peninsula beef club hosts Nova Scotian exchange farmer by Glenn Werkman The Review A national exchange program for 4-H beef club members has come to the Peninsula. Wayne Oulton, 18, of the Anna- polis Valley in Nova Scotia, is spending two weeks with Saanich Peninsula 4-H Beef. Club family John and Fran Kennedy of Central Saanich. “Its pretty nice,” Oulton said July 11 at the local club’s achieve- ment day at the new Saanichton Fairgrounds at Cumberland Farm on Stellys Crossroad. “Some things are different and some things are the same.” He finds the weather drier, the forest and lush vegetation enjoya- ble, but the cattle is much the same. — While here, Oulton will enjoy some fishing for salmon, visit a farm family in Cobble Hill for one week and enjoy some of the best hospitality Vancouver Island can offer. He’s from the 35-member Avon Calf Club. Members back home have more “exotic breeds” than the dominant Herefords here, he said. Last year, Clayton Kennedy, 19, traveled to a rural area outside Toronto as part of the same pro- gram. He went to a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game and worked at the Queen’s Plate thoroughbred horse race. “He had the time of his life,” Fran Kennedy said. “It was his first big trip.” Brentwood Bay Royal Bank manager John Smeathers said the inter-provincial program in B.C. is coordinated by an agricultural and farm support specialist in Van- couver. The program involves one per- son from each of several Eastern provinces (Newfoundland- Labrador, Prince, Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) exchanging with five people from Western provinces. Meanwhile, Sandi Cavanagh received the Grand Champion showmanship honors during the annual achievement day with her yearling steer Steel Magnolia. Kim Kennedy and Baron were named reserve grand champion. Local 4-H members are prepar- ing to auction their animals for slaughter, with some destined for buyers at the Pacific National Exhibition and others going to the bidding block at the Saanich Fair during Labor Day weekend. The 18-member club, between the ages of nine and 19, is active in the community with petting farm displays, Clean-Up Week partici- pation, extended care facility visits with animals, and flower planting projects. In past years, members have bagged and sold manure to garden- ers as a fundraiser. “We are trying hard to become responsible and conscientious individuals through our involve- ment in 4-H,” a press release said.
