| Sports - sidney criterium marred by crashes A crash-marred day of bike Tacing in Sidney last week was bitter-sweet for Victoria Wheeler Pete Neilson. Neilson won the 20-lap veter- ans/masters race (35 years and older) during the Sidney Days Criterium July 1, then crashed on the last lap in the category 4 race later in the day. Neilson, 35, was riding in a pack at the front with two.or three other Tacers when he crashed, race orga- nizer Austin Smith said. ’ _ He was the most seriously é j injured on a day of racing marked : by four crashes. “He’s got a smashed knee cap, a broken wrist and a punctured lung,” Smith said. 3S Several other riders were taken to Saanich Peninsula Hospital where they were treated for injur- ies. The criterium, part of the Sidney Days celebrations, was held on a circuit through downtown Sidney Streets. The final race of the day, the 35-lap category one and two (com- bined) was won by Vancouver rider Rodney Henderson. Victoria Wheeler Robert Slaughter finished second while Mike Korb, also of | -@ the Wheelers was fourth. Fifth | place went to Roland Green of the Juan de Fuca Cycle Club. In the category three race, cover- ing 30-laps around the circuit, Vancouver rider Mike Wright was first. Victoria Wheelers Ian Smith and Rodney Thomas placed third and fourth respectively. A Vancouver rider also captured the 25-lap category four race. Ste- phen Anderson finished ahead of Wheelers Craig Hamilton in second, Laurie Munn in fourth, and Kevin Key in fifth. Behind Neilson in the veterans/ masters category were: Bernie Willock of Victoria’s I.C.C. Wheels of Thunder, second; Kerry Blain, Victoria Wheelers, fourth: — and Murray Drew, Victoria “Wheelers, fifth. Victoria riders accounted for the top five places in the novice race. Jarek Bekesza and Richard Stark, LC.C. Wheels of Thunder team members, were first and second. Third went to independent rider Peter Stevenson. Art Shepherd and Jim Shepherd, both Wheelers, were four and fifth. The round-robin, sponsored by the Sidney Mixed Slo-Pitch League, got underway on Friday with games at Blue Heron Park and other locations. Of the 24 teams entering the event, the top 16 in the round- robin advanced to the champion- ship round on Sunday. The eight remaining teams competed in the consellation round.
