Peninsula met the host team in Saturday’s first game and had a goal to spare at the end of a 13-goal thriller. In the second and third games of the tourney, they lost 8-4 to Surrey and 6-2 to South Delta, a team spokesman said. The MVP awards for Peninsula went to Matt Rodrique (who topped their weekend list with four goals), Kyle McInnis and Robin Postings. Both Postings and Tyler Hall, who shared goal-tending duties, were superb for Peninsula over the weekend’s play. In the course of the three games, Brendan Gummer pitched in with three goals, Chase Jaeger two goals, Ryan Bodrug two goals, Tyler Hall one and Ricky Sam one. But, it’s just one of many. Mer- kell is preparing for his 31st play- off series in the league this month. Since June 1961, when he ini- tially “filled in for one evening” as coach for the Deep Cove Bomb- ers, Merkell has lived for the Little League. His teams have won the league four times and been for the tournament sportsmanship award. : On Tuesday, June 9, the Penin- sula Tykes were at home to Juan de Fuca and coasted to a 13-8 win. Terry Hall led the way with four goals, the others coming from Danny Lapointe (2), Ryan Werk — (2), Robert Kinnear, Teddy Sam, Shane Chalker, Wayne Morris and Richie Daniels, one goal each. Chris Straud also played a big game for Peninsula who have lost only two games this season. Saanich led 3-0 before Peninsula launched a come- back in the third, Sean Ferch scoring twice as they fell just short Laurie Meilis and Brendan Gummer were strong while pick- ing Up an assist each and Tyler Hall had an exceptional game in goal, turing back 28 shots. MIDGET - Also on June 8, Peninsula War- tiors Midget “B” met Saanich Mid- get “A2,’ coming back from 4-2 behind to record a memorable 9-8 win over the visitors. The Warriors offensive punch was provided by Clayton Mitchell (three goals), Paul Rees (two goals) and Mark Wildy (two goals). Leslie Tom and Mike Boyd also picked up a goal apiece. At the other end, goaltender Craig Pelton was in great form. The winning goal came when Mark Wildy scored on a break- away late in the game with the score tied at 8-8. The Midget ‘B” Warriors have now won seven, lost four and tied two from their 13 games played for the season. happy, Merkell’s happy crowned play-off champs twice. His first involvement came when the Bombers coach, North Saanich schoolteacher, Mr. Rus- sell, was unable to make a fixture and Merkell was deputised. In 1963, he tnoved to the Army, Navy and Air Force team, helping out the first manager Gordon Cherry and the second, Mel Pear- son, for his first year. In ’64, he took the mantle himself and has been chief of the Braves since. He commends the team’s spon- sors for their contribution over the years, saying their involvement has seven Saanichion scouts receive prestigious Chief Scout badges Seven scouts from the 10th Tsartlip Scouts in Saanichton were among those given prestigious Chief Scout’s badges on comple- tion of their gold level program. The presentation was made by Premier Mike Harcourt at the Parliament buildings last month. Receiving the Chief Scout’s Badges were scouts David Baker, Hayden Cyr, Geoffrey Gotto, Dar- ten Robinson, Jesse Bannerman, Kyle Lister and Bill Wilton. The award is the highest given to 11-14 year old Scouts for achieve- ment in outdoor skills, leadership, environmental awareness and community service. The second half of the award came when the Greater Victoria Region presented the boys with their Chief Scout’s Certificate. “This is quite a prestigious award,” said Rick Laddish, chair- man of the 10th Tsartlip group committee. “It takes quite a lot of work and determination to achieve that level. We are lucky to have such an active group and we had the highest number of Chief Scouts in Greater Victoria.” The group committee of the 10th Tsartlip Scouts presented the boys with engraved compasses. They reach Chief Scouts level after a strict and strenuous pro- gram which sees many scouts drop out along the way, added Laddish. “They only get out of the pro- gram what they put into it and what the leadership puts in ... the leadership in this group has been great.” Fathers are special, and Facets have Sidney's most unique selection of | \ jewellery & watches just for him! This year’s winning team is one of the top five he has coached, says Merkell, but it’s too hard to pin it down any closer than that. He is delighted with the league win, especially for the players who have been with him for three years but are over-age next season — “those are the boys you don’t like to lose” — but also because ‘“‘it gives the ones back next year an extra incentive, to keep their image up. It gives them a good goal.” Merkell betrays little self- satisfaction about his own contr- bution over the years or to this year’s league win but when asked if the win gives him personal pleasure, he concludes, “if the kids are happy, I’m happy.” TheReview Wednesday, June 17,1992 — co | > ae SIDNEY OFFERS YOU: _ “Solutions For Your Travelling Needs” TRANSPORTATION FOR: | ¢ €Community/Service Organizations - Athletic Groups < Conventions - Seniors ¢ Reunions - And Your Group Too!!
