‘University is more of a privilege

On Friday, June 26, the Stelly’s
class of 1992 graduates from
highschool, myself included.
Along with the approaching end of
my high vschool career, this publi-
cation marks the end of my col-
umn writing days...for now.

I would like to take this opportu-
nity to pass on my personal
insights on school life in the
1990’s.

It seems undoubtedly obvious
that the school experience has
changed over the past decade.
Those who graduated before 1984
did not write Provincial Examina-
tions worth 40 per cent of the final
subject mark.

: Today's Grade 12s take two or

€ihree hour examinations in Eng-
lish, English Literature, French,
Geography, History, Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, French, and
Francais Langue.

These exams take weeks of pre-
paration and in some cases, deter-
mine pass or fail, scholarship or no
scholarship, university or no univ-
-ersity.

Sity, students must achieve a B-

plus average, a dramatic increase
from even a few years ago. Rumors
are saying that the entrance
requirement will increase in the
next two years.

Unfortunately, getting a post-
secondary education is becoming
a privilege only the elite can enjoy.

The Socred government pro-
| noted the Year 2000 educational
document that is starting to be
implemented in elementary
schools. Now, under a new govern-
ment, the future of education is
even further from black and white.

I must encourage parents to get
involved in the changes and find
out what-is going on. The docu-
ment presents huge changes that
will affect students greatly. The
time to ask questions is now.

Most importantly, I think that it
is easy to forget what the school
experience is like. On top of the
confusion of young adulthood, stu-
dents deal with the constant pres-

sure of finding a career path to
follow. The report cards we read
four times a year let us know if our
dreams are achievable. :

Not everyone is as lucky as I
was to be encourage and inspired
by the teachers at school. Not
everyone finds what they want
from life before they graduate. My
last message to the community is
to continue to be involved in the
education of their children. Invest-
ing in the young people is invest-
ing in the future!

I'd like to thank the community
for accepting student journdlists
and The Review for the opportu-
nity to write this column. The
experience pushed me in the direc-
tion of my career and I’m off to
study journalism at Carleton
University in Ottawa.
