Sle ak ee eee News ‘Love thy neighbor’ given practical twist through Link NEIGHBOURLINK> A Ministry of World Vision Canada by Valorie Lennox The Review The Biblical injunction to ‘love thy neighbor’ is being imple- mented by eight Peninsula churches through a new program, NeighborLink, which will be dedi- cated in a ceremony on Saturday, June 27. Open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on RANDALL REIMER Tuesdays and Thursdays, Neigh- borLink provides both an informa- tion and referral service. Church volunteers are also part of NeighborLink and may provide services which are not covered by social service agencies. Examples of such services could include collecting donations for a family after a fire, emergency babysitting for a parent who needs medical attention or help for a widow or widower trying to cope after the death of a spouse. ~ There are people who may fall through the cracks and this is one way to help,” said Randall Reimer, one of the committee members working to establish the new ser- vice. Saanichton Bible Fellowship, Friendship Baptist, Grace Com- munity, St. Andrews Anglican, Sluggett Memonal Baptist, Bren- twood Chrisuan Assembly, Bren- twood Anglican and Common- wealth Christian Centre have all committed to participate in the program. Reimer estimates the member- ship of the cight participating churches at 500 to 700 people and anticipates a pool of 100 volun- teers for NeighborLink. “We're getting church people who will come out and help their neighbors,” Reimer said, adding that there is no religious obligation attached to the service. “Somebody can go in and meet a need with no strings attached. I think that is a lot more managea- ble way of helping people.” Volunteers will man the office during operating hours and a 24- hour answering service is also available at 655-4445. “We're not duplicating services which other organizations pro- vide,” Reimer said. Organizers are working with other social service agencies on the Peninsula, he added. PCA THRIFT SHOP - The thrift shop is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Good quality recycled goods. NeighborLink will screen calls and refer people to the most appro- priate social service or local agency — or arrange for a church volunteer for those needs which fall outside agency mandates. “Services may be visiting the aged or sick, providing transporta- tion for the disabled, minor home repairs for single mothers or the elderly, food; clothing and housing for the destitute, financial, family and marriage counselling and a wide range of other related ser- vices,” Reimer said. Often people may suspect some- one else in the community needs help and may be willing to help — but do not know how to offer help, Reimer said. The organization will also try to ensure clients do not become dependent on NeighborLink but will move towards self-sufficiency. “We hope to teach people how tO manage in the long run,” Reimer said. The Peninsula program is the first NeighborLink on the Island although there is also a group organizing in Victoria, Reimer said. operating in the United States for 10 years and in Canada for two years. There are NeighborL ink centres There are people who may fall fhrough the cracks and this is one way to help’ in Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, Dawson Creek and Edmonton. “NeighborLink Saanich Penin- sula is the pilot project for Van- couver Island,” Reimer said.
