safety-conscious boater.

Flares are another important
item for boaters. Hand-held
flares that fit in the pocket of a
PFD can greatly increase the
chances of rescue. A whistle at-
tached to a PFD is also
desirable, says Pakenham.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit
#33 was dispatched on a winter
night in response to a Mayday
call from a vessel aground on
Discovery Island, near Oak Bay.
The skipper refused to leave the
bridge to talk to the rescue crew
in the Zodiac that braved dark-
ness and reef-strewn waters to
get to the commercial fishboat.
The deckhand came to the stern
of the vessel to talk to the crew of
the rescue vessel Jack Groves. He
said they were heading south
from Zeballos bound for Victoria
Harbor: They missed the light at
Ogden Point. Both men said they
were sleeping at the time of the
mishap when the 40 foot fishboat
ran aground near the southern
tip of the island on arocky beach.
Both blamed the other for the
mishap. The crew of the Groves
noticed a case of empty Labatt’s
Blue floating just off the stern.

Pakenham says mariners
should note that there is a
major commitment by law en-
forcement agencies to curb
drinking and boating. Hand-
held breathalyzer units are
being used on the water to catch
impaired boaters. Smart
mariners are using a designated
driver on boating outings.
