Community TaeReview Wednesday, May 27,1992 — A10 Centre impresses Chinese delega The homelike atmosphere of the unique Mt. Newton Adult Day Care Centre in Saanichton trans- cends culture and language. It was the homey touches of the centre — the tole-painted door signs, the old-fashioned wood stove in the foyer and the pillow- decked couches — which most impressed a delegation from main- land China on May 14. “They were fascinated by the furniture we had to make it seem like a home,” said executive direc- tor Patsy Berger-North. “They were most impressed with the homelike atmosphere of the centre.” On the delegation were munici- pal and Red Cross officials from Shanghai, China, accompanied by. Red Cross representatives from Vancouver. Berger-North said the Mt. New- ton Centre was only called the day before the visit. The Centre’s bus, which usually transport seniors to and from the daycare, was com- mandeered to pick up the delega- tion from the Empress Hotel and bring them out to the Peninsula. Enroute, the Chinese visitors requested a side trip to Butchart Gardens — so a short visit to the gardens was arranged, Berger- North said. The population is aging and a reduced birth rate has eliminated the traditional structure in which several children were available to look after aging parents. China’s new one-child policy will gradually result in a dispro- portionate percentage of elderly in the population. The delegation was interested in methods which will help seniors remain independent in their own homes. The services offered by Mt. Newton Daycare include special ‘They were fascinated by the furniture we had to make it seem like a home’ One of the Chinese delegates, Dr. Lin Jianhua, acted as an inter- preter as he had become fluent in English while completing post- graduate health studies in New York. Through Jianhua, Berger-North learned the care of the elderly was a serious concern in Shanghai, which has a population of 13 million.
