News TheReview Wednesday, May 27,1992 — A5 “Man rebuilt steam engine The man who rebuilt the Royal Hudson’s steam engine before the train was put back in service passed away in Saanich Peninsula Hospital May 19 at the age of 83. NICHOLAS STORASCHUK Nicholas Storaschuk was bom in Stuartburn, Manitoba, on Dec. 23, 1908. He left school early to work on his parents’ farm and in 1932 married Kate Sluchinsky. He continued to farm until 1939, when he joined the army and served overseas until 1945. Following the war, he returned to farming until 1950, when he began working for the CPR as a steam engineer on the Prince George, an Alaska cruise ship. After 23 years’ service, he left the ship for a new challenge: rebuilding the Royal Hudson Steam engine. Reconstruction of the steam engine was his last job before Tetirement. After retiring, he moved to Victoria and, in October 1979, married Marguerite Frances Worden. Except for a few years in 100 Mile House, between 1984 and 1987, the couple continued to live in the Greater Victoria area. Stor- aschuk was admitted to Saanich Peninsula Hospital extended care following a stroke two years ago. -His wife, Marguerite, still lives in North Saanich. COLWOOD —DIRECT CREMATION | Parkinson’s studied on Peninsula A Harvard University study into the genetic background of Parkin- son’s disease has involved a client of the Mt. Newton Daycare Centre in Saanichton. Earlier this year, the centre hosted researcher Dr. Zbigniew K. Wszolek of Nebraska as he met with the Parkinson’s disease patient and the patient’s family. Executive director Patsy Berger- North said’ special arrangement were made to open the centre on a Sunday. Dr. Wszolek collected genealo- gical information from the family, who had already traced their back- ground, and took blood samples from family members. He also videotaped the Parkin- son’s disease patient and took blood samples. Berger-North said the daycare centre and the family agreed to participate in the study “in hopes this will help other people with the disease.” The study is tracing both the genealogical and cultural back- ground of Parkinson’s disease patients, in hopes of identifying how the disease has been transmit- ted through generations and throughout the world. The long-term research project is sponsored by Harvard Univer- sity in Boston.
