SPAC ART SHOW AND SALE

Paintings by members of the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts
will be exhibited on the mezzanine of the McPherson Theatre from
Jun 1 to 19.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART CLASSES

Tine Andriesson Holmes (Art and Education B:A.) 1s offering
weekly classes for children from ages 6 to 12 and for teens on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday momings and on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons, with a limit of six students per class.
Registration is Saturday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at her
studio, 9732 First Street in Sidney, or phone 655-3760.

MUSIC

The Peninsula Singers present an Evening of Song on Tuesday,
June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Royal Canadian Legion on Mills Road.
Refreshments will be served. Funds from the tickets, adults $5 and
seniors $3, will be donated to a charity.

Lynn Hunter, MP for the Saa-
nich-Gulf Islands nding, has come
out with a strong waming about
the dangers of exposure to sunlight
and the urgent need for awareness
programs and regulation of sun-
screens and sunglasses.

Reiterating her concerns about
ozone depletion, she said one in
seven Canadians born this year
will develop skin cancer and the
associated costs will hopelessly
over-burden the Medicare system
unless urgent steps are taken.

With no regulations covering the
ultra-vie’et protection of sun-
glasses and sunscreens varying
widely in their effectiveness in
blocking the cancer-causing rays,
Hunter says it is time government
made “the rating and testing sys-
tems for both sunscreens and sun-
glasses a priority.”

Without a change in lifestyle,
she said, people face ever-
increasing risks of both skin can-
cer and cataracts caused by over-
exposure to UV tays.

“The testimony before the Envi-
ronment Committee last month
was chilling,’ she added.
“Dermatologists gave expert testi-
mony that would have those week-
