Sports Fast finish in high school irack sets stage for Sireet’s shot af provincial Junior team by Glenn Werkman The Review The years are finally catching up to track star Adam Street. Last year the Parkland Seconda- ry student burned up the track during qualifying trials for the B.C. Juvenile team with exception- al performances in the 100-metre and 200-metre disciplines. But coaches could not sign him up because of a minimum age requirement of 16 years, although he placed third in the 100-metre event and first in the 200-metre event. Saturday at a meet at the home- town track at Parkland School in Sidney, Street looked forward to making the B.C. team in terms of age. With a recent performance of 10.8 seconds in the 100-metre dash during qualifying for the Lower Island High School cham- pionships at UVic’s Centennial Stadium last week, speed shouldn’t be a problem. That time broke the previous record of 11.1 seconds. “I'm happy with my perform- ance,” the soft-spoken 15-year-old Grade 10 student said. His time of 21.8 seconds in the 200-m event set a new record as well, and left all other competitors in his wake. The secondary school track and field season is nearing an end as the track club season begins. The Island’s high school finals began yesterday and the provincial high school competition will soon fol- low. Already Street is looking for- ward to qualifying trials for the B.C. provincial team, set to start in July and end in August. This time he plans to try out for the junior team. With his 16th birthday on August 11, Street would normally be among juvenile track athletes within the 16- 17-year-old age _ bracket. But there is no regulation against a 16-year-old competing against 18- and 19-year-olds in the. Junior category. “Tt was just a policy that they don’t take people under 16,” Street said about last year. Since then, the former Peninsula Track Club athlete has become stronger and increased his speed with the help of Victoria Track Club coach Arthur Taylor. He also enjoys training on the Centennial Stadium track at UVic and believes there’s lots of time left in the 1992 season. “T haven't reached my peak, not this early yet,” he said. “I think I can improve on my umes.” . His goal is to achieve a 21.6 or CROSSING THE FINISH LINE required all the energy this 21.7 second time in the 200-m event. “1 think I should be able to make it,” he said. Street only breaks from training during September and October. This summer he anticipates travel- ling with the Victoria Track Club to the Lower Mainland and some track events in the United States. Currently, training concentration is being placed on getting out of the starting blocks quickly and doing over-distance training to improve strength, he said. With the help of his parents, Street gets to UVic three or four times a week for workouts. His record shows he’s on the right track to success, something once achieved by Street’s longtime hero — Ben Johnson. young man could muster Saturday during the Island Mini-Meet series at Parkland School. e Books NEW . e Legos STOCK ° Toys HAS ~< s Gren ARRIVED! % Travel Games ee FOR THE KIDS! 2496 Beacon Ave. Sidney $60,000 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE PHONE 655-4332 Sidney and North Saanich Little League and the Sidney Rotary Club are jointly holding an auction on July 4th, during Sidney Days Celebrations. ceeds raised will be shared by these organ- izations. ad in The Review for donated items.
