Her coach at the Keating Fitness Centre, Jim Townley, said the five- foot-nine, 148-pound pharmacy technician was the crowd favorite but another entrant got the first- place nod. : However, it was a novice event and the judges were novice, he said. Townley predicted she should do much better in the B.C.’s May 9 in Vancouver as the judges have a better concept of what to look for. “She has the potential to go quite far,” he said. “She has the ability to create nice long lines, which the judges like.” For Walt, keeping fit is a part of her life as a former member of Canada’s national rowing team. She was used to working out 20 _ hours a week to keep her muscles in shape for the physically demanding sport. : Now, with body building, she is still keeping fit, but rather than concentrating on a specific muscle ~ group fora sport, she is developing her whole body. In lady’s body building, judges look for the symmetry and balance of the whole body. Muscle mass is the primary element in men’s competition. “T still look normal in regular clothes,” she says of the fact that there is a misconception of female body builders having very large, over-muscled bodies. Another misconception that bothers her is the steroids myth that all body builders use steroids. Walt says the myth is completely untrue, especially in her case. “T work in a pharmacy and I know what those things can do to your body,” Walt said. “It’s fru- strating that people think I must be on steroids. Well, I’m not. “People who use steroids are dishonest with themselves.” She trains between 26 and 32 hours per week and has had to eliminate all the fats and sugars from her diet. “I miss my cookies,” she said: However, Walt said she enjoys keeping fit and her first competi- tion was a lot of fun. “Tt’s a lot more social than rowing,” she said. “And, it’s nice to train in a place that’s warm and dry.” TheReview Wednesday, May 6, 1992 — A22 g BES GIFT BASKETS Built with Mom’s Favourites Our selection of products is as wide as your imagination.
