Community - Helping hands for community Thanks to volunteers, the Penin- sula is a better place to live. Just ask Edith Duncan, who enjoyed a gala party on her 98th birthday, thanks to the efforts of the Peninsula Community Associ- ation’s volunteer seniors’ visitors. Volunteers from the group arranged the party, complete with cake and candles and a visit from Sidney Mayor Marie Rosko, to celebrate Duncan’s birthday. The over 30 volunteers involved in the program provide a valuable contact into the community for seniors who may have few other Visitors, due to distance from fam- -@ ily and friends. The program is one of many volunteer efforts sponsored by the Sidney-based association. PCA community coordinator Donna Godwin says over 150 volunteers are actively involved in a variety of PCA programs. Included are the volunteer driver program, which takes senior, hand- icapped and seriously ill patients ment. There are also volunteers who provide information or clerical help in the PCA’s Third Street office. Assistance to senior residents is provided by three volunteer handy- men and by others willing to run emands, do minor repairs or help @ = with gardening. Counselling is available, thanks to volunteers who complete a lay | counselling course and then volun- | teer their time to help others. A volunteer grandparent pro- gram links volunteer seniors with children whose own grandparents may live beyond reach. : Among the most numerous vol- | unteers are those who work in the _ thrift shop, which generates funds to support many of the associa- tion’s community services. To recognize volunteers during the April 26 to May 2 Volunteer Week, the PCA is holding an open house today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are invited to drop and _. discover the many programs and @ volunteer opportunities offered by the association. “It’s the touch of care that makes a difference in our com- munity,’ Godwin said. _ to doctor’s offices and for treat-' TheReview Wednesday, April29,1992 — Al5 ‘It’s the fouch of care that makes a difference in our community’ A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY was enjoyed by Edith Duncan, thanks to volunteers from the Seniors’ Visiting Program.
