Student literary journal is the first in Canada

A publication promoting poetry
and fiction by students, The Clare-
mont Review, was officially
launched March 26.

“We are a literary review for
high school writing students in

- North America. We will take the
best, regardless of where they
come from,” says Claremont
Secondary teacher Bill Stenson,
who co-edited the journal with
fellow Claremont teacher Terence
Young.

Stenson notes the Claremont
Review, which he hopes will be
published twice a year, is the only

journal of its kind in Canada.

The teachers started the project
18 months ago. Some of the
$3,000 required to publish the
1,000 copies of first journal came
from corporate and individual
sponsors, Stenson said.

Copies of the journal are availa-

ble from the school, in Tanners
Books in Sidney and in Victoria
bookstores starting this week.
Stenson said hundreds of sub-
missions from throughout the
province were received for the first
edition, however many of the
works chosen for publication were

written by Claremont students.

“We were very eager to publish
out-of-town writers,’ Stenson
said. “But Claremont students
tended to produce work closer to
the literary mandate of the
Review.”

Students at Claremont have the
benefit of the Writing 12 class
taught by Young, one of the few
such classes in the province focus-
ing On poetry and fiction.
