The Piranha Summer Swim ‘Club, which last weekend opened registration for the season, is now in its 14th season offering guid- ance through both developmental and training programs where swimmers’ progress according to their ability and enthusiasm. With the help of coaching staff, swimmers in the Piranha club set their own goals and objectives. Members compete at meets throughout the summer on Van- couver Island and occasionally on the Lower Mainland. All swim- mers can compete, regardless of skill level. Regardless of competition, the swimmers are encouraged to work hard for self-improvement and are rewarded at the end of the season with fit bodies, keen enthusiasm, the memory of a fun summer and, as often as not, new and lasting friendships forged through their involvement with swimming. The Piranha°club also encour- ages family fun through participa- tion in weekend camping while at meets and social activities for both members and their parents. The Piranhas train at the Pano- rama Leisure Centre, attempting to broadly classify swimmers between those who need develop- mental instruction, stroke correc- tion and stamina training. Training lasts about two hours a day during the summer, with meets held on weekends. Year after year, the Piranhas manage to maintain a high stan- dard of performance — taking eight medals in last year’s B.C. Provincial Championships in Coquitlam, for instance. Undoubtedly the hero of that championships was Jennifer DeWolf who took gold in both 50m and 100m freestyle events (Div 7). In “the meet of the Jennifers,” Jennifer Aspin took silver in the 50m fly stroke (Div. 4) and Jen- nifer Deane took bronze in the 100m breast stroke (Div. 5). Both boys and girls Division 4 teams took gold, the boys in the medley event and the girls in freestyle. The boys also took silver in freestyle. In Division 5 girls competition, the Piranhas placed third in the medley event. All the medal winners set club records in those B.C. champion- ships, as did Kimmy Tyndall in the 50m breast stroke (Div. 3G) and Christopher Aspin in the 100m Wilts Ox. “The MEN’S Shop” | Just North of the Landmark Building on 2nd St 656-4443 medley (Div 1B). At the regional championships — in competition with Nanaimo, ’ Courtenay, Port Alberni, Port Hardy, Campbell River, Victoria and Esquimalt — the Piranhas enjoyed 52 top three finishes, with Jennifer Deane breaking the record for Division 5 girls freestyle in a time of 29.99 seconds. It was a very successful meet, with 28 swimmers winning prime Piranha towels for putting in per- sonal best times in all four events swum, and the club is hoping to go one step better and take first place in this year’s championships in Victoria. The Piranhas also hope to improve on their current eighth Spot in the provincial rankings.
