That’s the only way to build math skills, according to retired teacher Ruth Barron, who plans to offer a math upgrading program in Sidney this spring. But she stresses the Kumon Math program is not a “quick fix” for those floundering through the final months of the school year. Instead, she says, the program combines two drop-in classes a week with homework to give stu- dents practice in basic math skills. “Tt is not a cram course,” she said. She and her husband William plan to offer the program from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Margaret Vaughn Birch Hall, Sidney. For $55 a month, students will receive all of the required learning materials, homework assignments and nine classes a month. The international Kumon Math program has been used for over 30 years to supplement school math programs, Barron said. ‘li’s the drip-drip- drip of practice that gets if? “Extending from pre-school through university calculus, the program is structured so that each stage naturally builds the skills necessary for the next one,” she explained. Students progress at their own pace, only progressing when they have leamed the previous material. “Kumon gives students who are experiencing difficulties the Opportunity to catch up with their peers; it lets the younger children ~) 2 > 923 A NUMBER BOX is part of the pre-school section of the Kumon Math program. Once students understand math, even those who used to fear the subject learn to enjoy it, she added. Math is an essential skill for those following careers in many scientific or business skills, Bar- ron explained. She feels students who learn math through problem solving, the traditional western approach, are at a disadvantage since they do not recognize the relationships between numbers. “The minute they press the wrong button on a calculator, they’re not familiar enough with numbers to be aware they’ ve got a ridiculous answer,” Barron said. She does not fault the school system. She believes many stu- dents just do not gain enough practice to become comfortable with basic math skills. “For the average student, there isn’t enough practice to make it instinctive. It’s the drip-drip-drip of practice that gets it.” Barron said the Kumon program can ‘also be taught to pre-school children. She would like to start a program in the Deep Cove area for young children. “My grandson can do it and he’s not quite two,” she said. The Sidney program will be open to both students and adults who want to improve their math skills, Barron said. “Tt teaches math skills but even more important, it teaches students to learn for themselves. Students learn that if they put effort in, they will succeed,” Barron said.
