Community TheReview Wednesday, March 25,1992 — Al0. f Parents ‘baffled’ by son’s brass concert Having their son’s brass group perform in Victoria next week has become a baffling experience for Stephen and Marjorie Denroche. In the workshop of their North Saanich home, the couple have been building baffles to enhance the April 3 performance at Christ Church Cathedral. “It’s is a most baffling experi- ence,’ joked Marjorie. She says it takes four hours to construct one baffle and six are needed for the show. “This is parental dedication to match the dedication of the musi- cians,” she noted. Steve Denroche plays hom and is the arranger for the Comucopia Brass Ensemble, a Vancouver- based group founded in 1986. On Friday, Comucopia and well- known soprano Catherine Lewis will present an unusual concert of brass and voice at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria. Lewis, a nationally recognized recitalist and recording artist, gra- duated from the University of Victoria. She has performed both contemporary and classical music and given recitals throughout Europe and Canada. She has performed with the Victoria Symphony, the Vancouver New Music Ensemble, Arraymu- sic, the Banff Chamber Players and the Calgary Philharmonic. A spirited and inventive group, Cornucopia have combined three French horns, two trombones and a trumpet to create a unique brass sound. Joining Denroche in the group are Christopher Robertson (trum- pet), Bruce Nicholson (tenor trom- bone, arranger, composer), Neil Nicholson (brass trombone), Dun- can Shaw (horn, arranger) and Lloyd Geidt (horn). Due to the unusual combination of instruments in Comucopia, the This is parental dedication to match the dedication of the musicians’ group must write new arrange- ments for most of the music they - play. Their selections range over the past 400 years, including Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Ellington and Thelonius Monk. On April 3, they will play works recorded at the Banff Centre for the Arts in February. One work, by Canadian com- poser Howard Bashaw, was com- missioned by the Banff Centre for Comucopia. Other works to be performed included Denroche’s arrangement of Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 by Villa-Lobos, Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock, a selection of pre- ludes by Debussy and Bruce Nicholson’s Bermuda Suite. With Lewis, the group will per- form an excerpt from Delibes’ opera Lakme, Kurt Weill’s Sur- abya Johnny, an 18th century Eng- lish folk song and a Duke Elling- ton number. All of the numbers, Majorie hopes, will be enhanced by the baffles she and her husband are now. constructing. Since Lewis and the musicians will be performing in front of the church alter, the baffles will be placed behind the group to reflect the sound out into the church, Marjorie explained. The wooden stands are being constructed at varying depths, ranging from one mm. to eight inches deep. “It’s been quite a feat,” she said. She notes Cornucopia has per- formed concerts and presented workshops in both the Saanich and Sooke school districts. During the day Apmil 3, they will perform at Pearson College. “T think they're an asset,” Mar- jorie remarked. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in the church. Tickets, available at the door, will be $10 regular and $8 for seniors and students. Marjorie suggests audience members bring a cushion for the church pews, then prepare to enjoy " a unique combination of brass and beautiful song. ~ Church Services FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH 7820 Central Saanich Rd. 9:45 a.m. ........
