Tennis court to deal with vandalism problem in Willis Construction of a multi-use ten- nis court and children’s play- ground in Willis Point is the isolated community's answer to a growing problem with vandalism. Resident Gaybrielle Halsey, who has been coordinating the tennis and residents are continuing to fund-raise and donate volunteer labor, Halsey said. A meeting on the project was held March 9 night and residents now hope the work will be com- pleted by mid-June. Doctor beats the end-of-winter blues Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show blew into Sidney March 8 with a prescription for those tail- end-of-winter blues: a dose of good old rock and roll. “We're going to have some fun tonight,” Ray Sawyer promised the barstool-to-barstool crowd packed into the Golden Bear to see the legendary band. Drawing on a decade of hits from 1972 to 1982, Sawyer led the six-man band in rhythmic beats which drew people to the dance floor. Snakeskin boots tapping out the beat, cigarette dangling from one hand and fingers caressing the microphone, Sawyer ranged through the band’s hits, from the wistful Sylvia’s Mother of 1972 to the seductive Sexy Eyes of 1980. Five members of the six- member band come from Ala- bama. Sawyer, sporting a Stetson, deliberately evokes the down- south, good old boy image — an image reflected in his lyrics. “J’ll never be Robert Redford *cause I’m much too fond of beer,” he sang. “I’m a pretty ordinary guy.” The crowd clapped along with the “hippie song,” Going to the Freakers Ball, and yodelled yip- pee-ki-yo-ki-yay on cue from the Doctor. Cheers and dancing between the tables greeted “The Cover of the Rolling Stone,” Dr Hook and the Medicine Show’s good-natured lament that they had not been featured on the cover of the rock magazine. “Going to get my picture on the cover, going to get five copies for my mother, going to see my smil- ing face on the cover of the Rolling: Stone,” Sawyer sang, almost drowned by the chorus of the crowd. The hour-long performance was not enough for the audience, who pounded tables and cheered until the band returned for a 20-minute encore. The community is a half- hour drive from the nearest recrea- tion centre. The estimated 250 residents of the area have no local recreation facilities, Halsey said. ““We’re from scratch. There’s nothing at all out here.” The wood structures in an old playground have rotted and had to be removed, she said. The group has received an $11,000 Go B.C. award to help construct the tennis courts and rebuild the playground. 30 50 Both will be constructed in a ALL GOLD and SILVER field adjoining the firehall on Wil- JEWELLERY, lis Point Road.
