Community An unlikely team of thieves take up stealing for charity in Peter Coke’s comedy, Breath of Spring, the latest production of the Penin- sula Players. Good intentions pave the road to wrongdoing. Dame Beatrice Appleby receives a fur from her maid Lily, a woman with a shady past. Upon leaming the fur was sto- len, Dame Beatrice plots with her friend, Lady Miller, her two boar- ders and a retired brigadier to return the fur without implicating Lily. The group has so much fun with the operation, they then form a Syndicate to steal furs, sending the proceeds to charity. The efforts of the later-day Robin Hoods are successful until one syndicate members reports the loss of her own fur and the police alrive. Only Lily, Dame Beatrice’s maid, has sufficient experience to save the syndicate — if she will agree to help. Lily’s decision, and the amusing mayhem leading up to the climax, will be presented March 25 to 28 and April 1 to 4 at St. Stephen’s Church Hall in Central Saanich. Curtain each night is at 8 p.m. Directed by Phyllis Clarke and produced by Linda Yorath, the play features Annie Spracklen as Dame Beatrice; Susan Anderson as Lady Miller; Bill Austin as the brigadier and Gayle Hozack as the maid, Lily. Other syndicate members are portrayed by Jean MacBride and Doreen Leslie. The long arm of the law is represented by Eric Grace and Hugh Peaker. Stage manager is Rick Shorting- huis. Residenis help refugee project Peninsula residents have been ‘among the donors filling the boxes which organizer Bente Rehm plans to send to Tibetan refugees in northern India later this’ year. Rehm is collecting warm clothes for the refugees, along with dona- tions of sewing and knitting sup- plies, school supplies, books for children and teens, bedding, hair and tooth brushes, small toys and games, pocket knives, pens, read- ing glasses, hand tools and watches. The Sidney Rotary Club donated $900 over the past two years to help defray shipping costs. Rehm is also planning to hold a garage sale and slide shows on Tibet to raise more money for shipping. Among the Peninsula donors are Kathy Towle who contributed a carload of clothing from herself and friends; Stephanie and Dennis Shroeder who brought 10 boxes of clothes and $100 from themselves and the congregation of St. Eliza- beth Church in Sidney and Daphne Farmer, who has brought clothing from the St. Stephen’s Church congregation and also helps with mending and sewing. Several Sidney consignment shops have donated unsold items and one shop, Merry-Go-Round Consignment in Sidney, is collect- ing donations from the public for the project. In order to raise money. for shipping, Rehm is selling exotic items brought back from her tra- vels in India and the Far East. For more information, call 381- 5123.
