Gardening Consider sending seeds to Russia Today I'd like to start this col- umn with a plea for help. I don’t want to go into a long song and dance about this but I’m talking about that enormous semi-trailer parked on Sanscha grounds, enti- tled, “To Russia With Love.” A group of Victoria people are collecting non-perishable food, medical supplies, etc., to aid Rus- sians, especially children, who are suffering from the effects of that tragic nuclear accident at Cherno- byl. I’ve done some checking to make sure this is not some sort of sick scam, but this effort tums out to be exactly as it appears: a legitimate attempt to provide assis- tance to people in desperate need. Can you help? Perhaps bring to the trailer something like a sack of flour, a tin of soup, some sugar or some tice, or perhaps pasta, plus, (from one gardener to another) a package of seeds of some sort that will be sown this spring in Russia. Let’s do what we can for these poor starving people who really are having a terrible time, while we confidently look forward to another blissful spring im this beautiful, fruitful part of the world! The trailer will be at Sanscha until Feb. 29, so, please, every- body! A couple of really interesting ideas came our way recently. Alice Fletcher says that if you will soak strips of rag in-creosote and hang these rags on sticks placed close to shrubs or plants that deer-would- die-for, the creosote smell keeps them from getting close enough to nibble off all new growth as it appears! She says that when she lived between Parksville and Qualicum deer were a real problem to gar- deners, but that one fellow ended their visits completely by suspend- ing creosote soaked rags, about a foot apart, on a string strung across his driveway. I suppose the remainder of his property was well fenced, to keep them from wandering in from other directions. ‘Wise gardeners don't prune their roses uniil affer the full moon’ My dear friend J.S. says, “Wise gardeners don’t prune their roses until after the full moon,” and then adds, “‘the voice is that of recent forebears who were prairie people.” Having yet to prune our roses, I heartily agree! I immediately con- sulted the calendar which shows the full moon was last night, so we can now safely do the dastardly deed! Horrors! Another caller was anxious to know whether or not he should use mushroom manure in his garden, rather than cow or horse. Without intending any harm I think it would be fair to tell everyone that there is almost no fertilizer left in mushroom manure. It simply adds humous, or bulk, to sandy soils (which don’t hold water) or aereates heavy soils to allow air to reach plant roots. It is a great additive to soils, but please don’t expect it to fertilize plants as well. Use green manures over the winter, and seaweed and compost the rest of the year, add- ing some chemical fertilizers when necessary. Talking about that, those of you who have been growing garlic over the winter could now give each of your plants about a teaspoon of 34-0-0 sprinkled around it in a circle about two inches out from the stem. P. MacD. asks what to do about slugs at this time of year. This is the time to begin to nd the garden of them, while they are young and NIKON LENSES YOUR EYES DESERVE THE BEST ANTI-SCRATCH COATING e WATER PROOF COATING « ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING » ULTRATHIN DESIGN ALL ON ONE LENS! : - Available at MAYCOCK OPTICAL #104 - 2376. However, “himself”? would have a conniption fit if I did this to his beer, so I do it the old- fashioned way with slug bait, or Deadline, carefully placed well inside a piece of pipe too narrow to admit the head of either a dog or Cat The piece of pipe is laid on top of the soil where slugs are lurking . in our case right next the Brussels sprouts, and alongside the remaining carrots. This reminds me that it is time to dig any remaining parsnips, since they are just beginning to grow. Store them in plastic bags, or, 1f you have any sand, sink them in that, cutting the tops off first. on FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH 7820 Central Saanich Rd. 9:45 a.m.........
