Sports Last-second win puts Parkland in tough playoff tourney Advancing to the Lower Island AAA basketball playoffs turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Parkland’s senior boys’ squad. The Panthers pulled out a last- second, last-gasp, sudden-death win over Vic High last Tuesday night for the right to advance. By beating Vic High 48-47, the Panthers secured the eighth and final playoff position. That's the good news. The bad is this meant they faced St. Michael’s University School — only the top-ranked AAA team in B.C for much of the season. SMUS romped to a 103-26 win IF YOUR VEHICLE Thursday at Vic High in Park- land’s opening game of the dou- ble-knockout tournament. Game two on Friday was closer, but it was still an 88-68 loss to Claremont at Belmont. So it’s curtains for the Panthers for the 1991-92 season, one which coach Joe Milligan looks back on with satisfaction, despite the fact that wins were few and far between. He said Panther teams have always played hard and represent- ed the school well out on the road, “and this year’s team was no exception, and because we did not CLEAR SKIES WERE welcomed by Peninsula Minor Soccer Div. 8 Sharks and Strikes players Feb. 16. Milligan said Claremont’s Grade 12-laden team was especial- ly sharp, something the Panthers could ill-afford if they were to eke out a win. Forward Jeremy Morrow drained 47 points for Parkland. The Panthers tumed the ball over on their next possession, but got the steal back with just seconds to play. Dale Hauser, a steady free throw shooter, was fouled. But he missed the first shot of a one-and-one, giving Vic High one last hope. A couple of desperation shots didn’t fall, and the Panthers had a hard-fought victory. Morrow led the way with 24' points. Panther girls seeded No. 2 Parkland’s senior girls’ basket- ball squad heads into the Island AA tournament this week as the second seed from the Lower Island. The team eamed this distinction by beating St. Michael’s Universi- ty School 61-47 last Tuesday night at Oak Bay. The game decided the second and third seeds. With the win, the Panthers will face a lower-seeded team from the North Island at the tournament, which runs Thursday to Saturday in Ladysmith. Coach Marg Metcalfe also notes the victory means Parkland may not have to face the undefeated, number-one ranked Lambrick Park team until the finals. Three teams will advance to the provincials in Prince George, and the Panthers now have a slight edge over SMUS. The Panther girls didn’t get off to a particularly good start in their SMU game. They were down by three points at the end of both the first period and opening half. “Tn the second half, they decid- ed to play some better basketball,” said Metcalfe. : Keying the comeback was the VIO PIAM Official Mark & Phil Holmes strong play of forward Genea Grist, who scored all of her 14 points in the half. || TheReview Wednesday, February 26, 1992 — Alt, “That was sort of the turn -@ around there,” said Metcalfe.
