News Five families need help with hall - by Glenn Werkman The Review Pamphlets and information about the Deep Cove Community Hall are being circulated in North Saanich in an effort to gain sup- port to save the historic structure. Last week, council in North Saanich ratified a directive to the Deep Cove Community Hall Association to relocate the hall within a 12-month time period. Currently, the association is made up five families who believe moving and restoring the hall is a worthwhile project. “Tf you think this is a vision worth pursuing and that the hall restoration should go ahead, please give one of the association members a call and express your support,” said association spoke- sperson Pauline Holdstock. The association needs to know if residents want this hall restored and functioning again, she said. Peninsula A high turn-out at a public hearing in Sidney Feb. 5 for the Healthy Atmosphere 2000 project was a surprise to CRD orgnaizers, given a simultaneous Town Hall meeting was held by the Town of Sidney. A standing-room-only crowd of 50 people contributed ideas on how to create a more sustainable community by reducing fossil fuel consumption and air pollution, said Capital Regional District coordinator Linda Porcher. Fossil fuel burming is the main culprit adding “greenhouse gasses” such as carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, possible leading to climate change. Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas, which has increased by 25 per cent since 1860, mainly from the burn- ing of fossil fuels. It is suspected that this might lead to a warming of the planet. The hall now sits on property immediately south of the Wain Road firehall on West Saanich Road. Association members recently put tarps over parts of the roof to protect the structure from winter rains. ARTIST'S RENDITION shows Deep Cove Community Hall in refurbished state. “The motion to let us find another site is meaningless unless a bigger group (gets behind the project) or we get council’s (finan- cial) support,” Holdstock said. A notice about the project also went out in the Deep Cove Ele- mentary School newsletter, she said. People in the community who would like more information or want to get involved can call Holdstock at 656-2430, Peter Brand at 656-0654, Peter Mason at 656-6428, Ron Perkin at 656-6288 or Michael Walden at 656-0004. Holdstock said that funds for a restoration project “could be met in part by Heritage B.C, and Go B.C. grants, and in part by dona- tions of labor time and materials from the community.” With a suggested estimate of $500,000 for construction of a brand new hall, Holdstock believes that, with an investment of $200,000, the community would be endowed with a much-needed hall and an important Jandmark in the history and development of the community would be preserved. “One only has to take a brief look around North Saanich to see that there are not too many public buildings of such age (built in 1922) still standing,” Holdstock said. “Are there any? Where is our heritage?” creates green vision Peninsula speakers gave presen- tations on the need to create a level playing field for solar energy by removing subsidies for fossil fuels, the importance of phasing out older wood stoves in favor on new EPA-approved wood stoves, the need to continue the moratorium on highway expansion until the two-year CRD Transportation Strategy is developed, the need to focus on and give higher priority to public transit instead of automo- biles, potential for revised land use planning to encourage cycling, the need to protect agricultural land, a call for a daily air quality index for public information, energy pricing, and other topics, Porcher said. The CRD Task Group on Atmospheric Change will accept suggestions in the areas of trans- portation, land use planning, energy and building regulation, A discussion paper is available at all public libraries, municipal council offices and the CRD to provide background on the Issues, Porcher said. A 10-minute video is also available.
