News Probst jailed nine monihs Former North Saanich Middle School teacher Thomas Edward Probst was sentenced to nine months in jail Feb. 11 on charges of indecent and sexual assault. Probst pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault and two charges of indecent assault, all of which arose from incidents involv- ing 13-year-old female students at the school. Probst resigned as a teacher in 1990. Judge Brian MacKenzie sen- tenced the 42-year-old Probst to nine months concurrent on each charge. The incidents, which involved fondling of three students during school events, occurred in 1978, 1980 and 1988. All of the incidents were similar, however different charges were laid since the wording of the law had changed in the interval between the offences. In addition to imposing the jail sentence, the judge placed Probst on probation for two years follow- ing release from jail. Under the conditions of the probation order, Probst is to accept counselling, including any program for sexual offenders, as directed by a proba- tion officer. Crown counsel Nicholas Lang said he received over a dozen phone calls from area residents urging that Probst be sent to jail. However, defence lawyer Robert Higinbotham submitted letters describing Probst’s skill and dedi- cation as a teacher. DOCTOR Continued from Page Al Burke observed that medicine has “gone a full circle” from the days when doctors would go out on calls after supper. Then, doctors shunned long working hours and house-calls became a thing of the past. “Now we're getting in touch with our patients again,’ Burke said. Marsh says treatment centres will increase the burden on the provincial government because more people will seek medical help because of its convenience. “You're going to lose some- where in this,’ Marsh said. “It’s not about me losing a couple of patients. My feeling is that I, or the emergency room, will do a better job for a lesser price.” Currently, doctor’s fees amount to $1.4 billion of a $5.4 billion total B.C. health care budget. x. OFF RESTHAVEN DR- BEACON PAVING Continued from Page Al They will oil the whole street, lay a cloth-like substance on the oil, then re-oil before putting down the pavement, said Reynolds. “Tt has to be done,” he said, adding “we are trying to do this with as little disruption as we can.” ‘ Workers will begin at 7 a.m. on paving day, and likely work through to 7 p.m. Town officials are confident the work will take only one day. Judith Bowen, president of the Sidney Association of Merchants, said merchants are concerned about losing two days of business — yesterday for grinding and a day for paving. There was hope the work could be done on Sundays, or even Mondays when fewer stores are open, but the cost for equipment and a crew is too high on Sunday, Reynolds said. Grinding was scheduled for Monday, but workers had Feb. 17 off as a Heritage Day holiday, so they would have received overtime pay. Bowen said Beacon’s new surface is needed and will be good in the long run, but “there’s no perfect time to do it.” er eal = Soe “ IT WAS A LONG haul for some Ist Tsartlip Boy Scouts from the Central Saanich municipal hall to St. Mary’s Church on Cultra Avenue. TODAY'S REAL ESTATE Tim Zahar E Arlene Davidsen ES TO BARGAIN OR NOT TO BARGAIN Yowve found a house you really love. It’s perfect, the chemistry is there, and the price is right. If you're like many buyers, you'll start off by asking the agent if they'll take less. Actually, the Realtor has no idea what they'll take. Our sellers don’t even know what theyll do unless there is an offer on the table. In many cases, the price is negotiable, but the only way to test it is to make a written offer that your sellers will accept, counter or reject when it is presented to them. At the same time, however, attractive homes that are well- priced sell quickly in any market, and if you get involved in offers and counter offers, someone else could come in with a better proposal while you're negotiating back and forth. If you're willing to take that risk, or if you can’t qualify for the financing at the asking price, give it a try. But ifit will break your heart to lose a home that you really love and that you can afford, it might be worth the asking price. If your are considering a move please call Tim or Arlene at NRS Properties Ltd. Our phone number is 652-5171.
