When Bruce Whittington moved
from the Ottawa Valley to Saani-
chton 15 years ago he had no idea
that he would become a well-
known naturalist and bird watcher.

But on Feb. 20 in Room A of the
Central Saanich Cultural Centre,
1209 Clarke Road, Brentwood, he
will present some of the informa-
tion he has gained in the past 15
years about local species.

’ The free program, sponsored by
the Friends of the Central Saanich
library, will start at 7:30 p.m.

Whittington’s interest in birds
started soon after moving to Saani-
chton, after he became a father and
house husband. Being home dur-
ing the day made him watch his
back yard birds with growing
interest.

When looking for books on
local birds he found there was
little available in Victoria. So he
Started a mail-order business in
bird books and bird watching
equipment. =

In 1988 he became a naturalist
for both Goldstream Park and the
Swan Lake Sanctuary, at which
time he also began to write a
well-know birding column for
Sunday’s daily newspaper

In 1989 his mail-order business
@vecame the Field Naturalist store

on Broad Street in Victoria. Any-
one with even the faintest interest
in man’s feathered friends will
find the store a delight and Whit-
tington a very knowledgeable
expert in local birds.

When bird watchers from all
over the North American continent
arrive on the island, they often
consult Whittington to find out
where they should go to find
skylarks, turkey vultures, hawks,
yellowbellied sapsuckers, hum-
mingbirds, towhees and juncos,

Feeding and housing birds has
become a popular hobby for local

ing to look uninterested; the tow-

progress of swallows building their
clay nests under the eaves.

paring a banquet for Feb. 18, in
honor of a visit to Sidney by Grand

HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION RULES

Many subdivisions have homeowner's associations with rules
placing restraints on what you may or may not do with your
property. They range from the types of vehicles that may be
parked in front of the property to the colors you may paint the
exterior. Many jurisdictions now require sellers to provide a copy
of any rules or covenants to prospective buyers and allow them a
period of time to study and approve them before finalizing the
purchase agreement.

Most covenants are designed to keep owners from doing things
that could depress property values, and they are generally
enforceable in a court of law. If you’re a rugged individualist and
want to retain the right to park your vans in your driveway,
paint your house a wild color, or erect a high privacy fence
around your property, you may want to think twice about buying
in a subdivision that won’t permit you to do these things. On the
other hand, many buyers find such rules reassuring. Whatever
position you take, be certain that, before you commit to purchase
a home, you understand clearly what any homeowner rules say
and will be happy living with them.
