The second-place Hobbits downed the Sanderlings 2-1 Satur- day in a match played at UVic. Shelley High opened the scoring for the Hobbits just before the end of the first half. She was able to trap a goal- mouth pass and fire a shot passed the Sanderling netminder. Up 1-0 at the break, Frances Cowley added to the Hobbits’ lead in the second frame, converting off a short comer. She cooly brought the ball into the shooting circle before putting a hard shot home, said team spokes- man Monica Dahl. The Sanderlings made it close with a goal later in the contest, but they didn’t pose much of a threat after their goal, said Dahl. This was despite the fact that the Hobbits were hobbled in the second half, playing short one player. Boxers on way to B.C. Games Two Victoria Athletics Club boxers have fought their way onto the Zone 6 team for the upcoming B.C. Winter Games in Vernon. The pair were winners at the annual Emerald Gloves tcurna- ment in Vancouver recently. Donny Om, 15, of Saanichton, advanced in the 125-lb. junior C category, while Victorian Ted Wil- kins qualified in the 156-Ib. mid- dleweight class. vill knocked-out his oppo- nent in the second round to take the gold medal. Both boxers train with the Vic- toria Athletics, which is based out of the Mount Newton A.E & A.M. Hall on East Saanich Road. About 20 boxers are training under Don Orr at the club, which was revived last year after being dormant for a few years. Orr himself has received an honor of sorts. He was chosen to coach the Zone’s B.C. Winter Games team. The club trains Monday, Tues- day and Thursday nights from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Hall, and new members are welcome. For information, call Orr at 652-5564. Meanwhile, in Third Division action, the Kapteyns dropped a 1-0 decision to the Ravens. Cash needed for new Little League park Sidney Little League is looking for $50,000 in its late-inning bid to build a multi-diamond complex before the end of the coming baseball season. The league is slowly edging closer to the moment when sod will be tumed and fields built on land at the Victoria airport leased from Transport Canada. The organization has been cov- ering all bases, negotiating a lease — which hasn’t been signed — for the land, located under runway 31 along Canora Road. Little League has also made its pitch to Sidney and North Saanich. . The municipalities have gone to bat for Little League, but some details are still on the plate. Work- ing out an agreement for maintain- ing the park could throw a curve into Little League’s plans. Little League has asked Sidney and North Saanich councils to be responsible for maintenance, esti- mated by Sidney staff to cost $30,000 a year. Sidney aldermen want the three parties to decide responsibility and who pays the bills, while North Saanich council referred the request to its budget committee. Little League says it will build a $375,000, five-diamond complex, and give it to the municipalities. But in order for Little League to avoid striking out, it has to raise some money. The league expects to recoup at least $113,000 of the cost in volunteer labor and machinery, and donated supplies. Grants and other revenues reduce the amount still needed to $50,000, said league president Ted Daly. A number of money-raising ven- tures are planned, from bottle drives and car washes to a major auction, plus an appeal to resi- dents. The league is also hoping to find donors of labor, machinery and supplies. The aim is to get the fields in right away, before the end of the season. “All you need are the fields, fences and back stops, and they can play ball,” said Daly. The concession building, which is estimated to cost $40,000, can be built later, or when funding permits, he says. w Ni EMERGENCY NUMBER 655-4459 5-10025 GALARAN RD. 655-1313 _ THE SAANICHTON _ OWN RESTAURANT cializing in Chinese Cuisine” - Daily Lunch Combination ts Special (For One Person) Dinner Combination Special (For One Person) AT IN © TAKE OUT ® DELIVERY _ CHINESE e SZECHUAN e WESTERN | 7784 East Saanich Road — __' {across from Prairie Inn on Mt.
