Gardening TheReview Wednesday, February 5, 1992 — A18 Expert will give local gardeners a treat This morning as we sat at break- fast I made my usual list, and since it was raining, planned a day of domestic chores. I’d wash the kitchen floor, do some washing, and certainly attack the ironing! Then the sun came out. I called to “himself” who was now firmly in control of the tele- phone, “I’m just going outside for about ten minutes to prune the grapevine.” Two hours later I sneaked in the door, feeling somewhat ashamed of my lack of self-control. Oh, it was sO gorgeous out there! Mil- lions of puddles reflecting the bright sunshine, yellow species crocus with their heads held high, a warm breeze, and 10,000 chores to be done! I did prune the grapevine, and faithfully collected the severed vines to be used in the bottom of the next compost pile. (This keeps air circulating through the bottom of the heap.) Then, since I already had the secatuers in my hand, I cut off all the dead foliage from the chrysan- themums, and hiked the refuse out to be composted. I heard a wren singing a lovely, lively tune in our small woods. Next I pulled a stalk of Brussels sprouts to have some right next the backdoor, so I don’t have to put on boots to collect enough for a meal. I had to get the shovel to cut off the Toot, so since I had it outside I dug out a few weeds, and beheaded three slimy slugs who were half- hidden in the top of a Brussels plant. I gave the filbert trees a shake to spread some pollen, but the tassels were too wet for this to work, however I did spy some fat pink thubarb shoots just peeking through the soil. If you want a really early taste, tip a large pot upside down over one clump, weighing it down with something heavy. The rhubarb tries to grow toward the light coming through the drainage holes in the pot, and rapidly makes long skinny stalks that taste just won- derful. I saw two bushtits, just the two, not the usual flock of 20, so I assume these little dears are con- sidering nesting. It really begins to look as though we will have a VERY early spring this year. Two items of considerable inter- est to avid gardeners: First the famous John Brookes, who is not as well known in Canada as he is in England, will give a lecture accompanied by slides on Con- Continued from Page A14 her husband. This talk will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at _ the Newcombe Theatre in Vic- toma. This superb designer of stylish town gardens in England runs a series of garden design courses at the Royal Botanic Gardens, at Kew, operates a School of Landscape Design, and travels the world on lecture tours. I wonder what he does with his spare time? I think we are very lucky to have an opportunity of hearing John Brookes talk to us in February and the tickets are only $10 each, available at Stevenson’s Garden Design, 10453-Allbay Rd. in Sid- ney, Tanners Books, Sidney, Dig This in Victoria, Brentwood Bay Nurseries on Benvenuto, Village Books in Cadboro Bay or from Out of Hand, 566-Johnson St., Victoria. Any questions can be answered by Giles Stevenson, at 656-8945. This clever duck organized the B.C. part of his tour for Mr. Brookes. Secondly; Two programs are being sponsored by Camosun Col- lege and, Hurray! they are being held here in Sidney, which makes it a lot easier for most of us. The first is series of four lec- tures on Fruit Tree Maintenance followed by a session in the garden where students can discuss their own problems, as well as witness actual pruning, training, planting and staking done by an expert ... in this case by Michael Gye, a man with 28 years experience as a consulting arborist. Please call 370-3153 for regis- tration information, and please do it soon, as classes start Feb. 11 at the Iroquois Park Club House, 2295-Ocean Ave. in Sidney. - The second is a class on creating your own mixed flower hanging baskets, being taught by Reinhard Schinz, the C-FAX “Good Gar- dener.” Fees include material and supplies for a hanging basket which would likely sell for $25 or more. Please call 360-3153 to register for this fun course, which will be held in early May, again at Iroquois Park Club House in Sid- ney. I haven’t forgotten the seed list, but there just wasn’t room for it today. Sorry! Continued from Page A16 walk around the room and see what they do. It is not what they. look like, it is what they feel like.” She may carry a camera but seldom uses it for photographs. “All I do with a camera is hide behind it so I can really stare.” Her concentration and attention to detail are also evident in her other works. Her portrait of Yehudi Menuhin hangs in England’s National Por- trait Gallery, a significant honor for any artist. She also painted three portraits of long-time friend Audrey Hepburn, which are owned by the actress. Copies of the works are displayed in Pavelic’s studio. Among her unique creations are collages from tissue paper, so finely crafted that they resemble watercolor. “I worked for a year in collage. Then I got awfully sick of tissue paper.” A perspective on her work will be presented tonight at 8 p.m. and Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. in Inner Likeness: A portrait of Mfawney Pavelic. The program was directed by Agustin EVES: Cordero. Sas ee ee ee SS ee In addition to portraits, Pavelic creates detailed sketches of tiny things, capturing the curve of shells and the fragility of a single stalk of grass. “T don’t like landscape because it is too big for me. I love it too much to limit it. I can’t put a frame around it,” she says. A professional pianist unul she was 19 and a lifelong artist, some- times she is surprised by her own work. Once, alone in her studio and awaiting the result of an operation on a family member, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She sketched, then dropped the drawing and left in response to a call from the hospital. Weeks later she returned to dis- cover the sketch, a few lines elo- quently portraying her despair with a rendering of a bowed head and a single, dangling hand.
