Community TheReview Wednesday, February 5, 1992 — A16 Artist discovers subject through sketches by Valorie Lennox The Review Line by line, brush stroke by brush stroke, Mfwaney Pavelic dis- covered Pierre Elliott Trudeau. “That’s how I learned about the man — the more I drew, the more I learned,’ the renowned North Saanich portrait painter said, describing how she fulfilled the commission to paint the official portrait of Canada’s 20th Prime Minister. The result is a consummate rendering of a thoughtful and aus- tere man, softened with a touch of humorous whimsy about his lips. Aguiline features, a red rosebud boutonniere and the dramatic fall- ing folds of a Loden cape add aristocratic mystery to the figure, displayed seated in easy elegance, the eloquent hands clasped. “There are hundreds of moods and people in this man’s compact body,’ Pavelic said. ““He’s extremely flexible and at ease wherever he is.” Before completing the official portrait, Pavelic captured many images of Trudeau, completing 39 drawings based on her observa- tions of Trudeau over the two-and- a-half days he spent at her North Saanich home last January. The works, ranging from 10- minute sketches to complete paint- ings, are now on display in the Maltwood Gallery at the Univer- sity of Victoria. The show opened Sunday and continues until March 1. Other shows are slated for March 14 in Montreal and Apnil 11 in Toronto. However the original of the final portrait is still buried somewhere in the Ottawa bureaucracy. Pavelic chooses her words care- fully when discussing the delay in scheduling the official unveiling of the portrait. In one morning alone she teceived two phone calls setting different dates for the unveiling, which was originally set for last Oct. 27. Her life and the rest of her work has been set aside until the Tru- deau portrait is unveiled. She would like to attend the unveiling, but she needs time to make arrangements. Fueled by a driving intensity, Pavelic cannot focus on another project. “I get concentrated when I’m working. If I was really work- ing, nobody and nothing else SIDE BY SIDE, portrait artist Mfawney Pavelic with sub- ject Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The cross-Canada showing of Pavelic’s drawings and paintings was to have following the official unveiling, as was the release of A Portrait by Myfanwy, a book by Victoria-based Morriss Publishing which describes how the portrait was created. “Tt’s a beautifully done little book,”’ Pavelic said. “It has every- thing, all the sketches plus all the paintings.” For artists and art-lovers seeking insight into how one of Canada’s most renowned portrait painters creates her masterpieces, the book is a Step-by-step guide through the process. “T’ve never met an artist who works quite the way I do,” Pavelic says. She does not pose her sub- jects. Instead she encourages them to walk around, to converse, to be at ease in her home and studio. “T never pose anyone, I let them Continued on Page A18 New these new fares. Centres. Build around 1927 for Mr. and Mrs. Whitely, the tea room, one of several along East Saanich Road at the time, had a roadside porch on two sides and rear views of the Sea. Note the handsome bell-cast roof and the centre chimney. The attached residence, said to have been build by noted local builder Mr. Styan, was probably shingled originally, adn build around 1932. Curiously, it had no separate kitchen, as the tea room kitchen served double duty. There are lovely fir floors in the spacious living room, where a later owner operated a dancing school. The building is part of a group of vintage buildings including the TEMPERANCE (Lion's) HALL, the former HAFER BROTHERS MACHINE SHOP, and the old KEATING TELE- PHONE EXHCANGE.
