=, News by Girard Hengen -The Review As plans proceed to refurbish Mary’s Coffee Bar, Sidney’s heri- tage advisory committee (HAC) awaits word on whether it can have a Say in the fate of the restaurant. The venerable Canora Road landmark, which gained notoriety as a hangout for Air Force flyers undergoing training for the Second World War at the Pat Bay Airport, has been closed for months, but new local buyers have been lined up for the land and the restaurant. The purchase isn’t official yet, but it is expected by the middle of » the month. - Jack and Sean McNeill would own the restaurant, while the prop- erty would be bought by Steve Wakefield and Rick Holmes from Robert and Joan Savage of Califor- nia Neighborhood pub An amendment to Central Saa- nich’s commercial zone was sup- ported to allow a neighborhood pub to be built at 7100-Wallace Dr. in Brentwood Bay Jan. 27. The amendment approved by the planning and zoning commitee allows premises licensed under the Liquor Control Licensing Act to be constructed in a C-1 commer- 4<@ cial zone. Engineer Al Mackey noted the amendment is consistent with Central Saanich’s proposed zoning bylaw. The committee recommen- dation must still be approved by council. Proponent Peter Naysmith plans to construct a 65-seat neighbor- hood pub with an attached 20-seat patio on a triangle lot owned by Bert Caine immediately north of Interior renovations will begin once the deal is signed, Jack McNeill said Monday. In the initial phase, the interior will be gutted to determine the building’s structural soundness. MeNeill said he intends to add an addition behind the property, _containing a new kitchen and seat- ing area, plus redo the inside, which needs extensive work. _ McNeill said he hopes to retain as much of the facade along Can- ora Road as possible. “We are very much in tune with maintaining the appearance and heritage of the building,” he said, adding some of the front pieces like the gutters have to be replaced. Sidney’s HAC wants town coun- cil to make sure the heritage significance of Mary’s is not for- gotten as it gets revamped. MeNeill said he is willing to achieves suppor from residents and council members Trafalgar Square shopping centre. The site will also house a 40-seat- family restaurant. Construction is to start in the summer of 1992 with the pub - expected to open six months later. Monday, Liquor Control and Licensing Branch spokesman Bob Lougheed said a referendum ordered by the municipality which polled residents surrounding the proposed pub achieved results with about 72 per cent of respond- ants in favor. Mary’s Coffee Bar could serve flyers again listen to concems from the com- mittee, and plans to approach members to outline his plans. The HAC asked council on Jan. 27 “that any improvements, addi- tions or demolition to Mary’s Restaurant be forwarded to this committee for input, at the time of building permit application.” Aldermen balked at the commit- tee’s request, referring the matter to staff for a report on its implica- tions. Ald. Ted Daly said the concern property owners have about the HAC is whether or not they will have a choice in having their properties designated — and thus protected — as heritage buildings. Ald. Dave Goulet said the owner should be consulted first. “T don’t think a committee of people should tell (an owner of a property) what he can do with it or. not do with it unless there is a two-way street.” Ald. John Calder, council’s liai- son on the HAC, was surprised at the reaction of his colleagues because the committee wasn’t ask- ing for designation. It requested a chance to have a say before a decision is made on the restau- rant’s future. “This is the first time the heri- tage committee is asking for a request, and this is just for input, and everybody is running for cover here.” The HAC’s recommendation was turned down by council in- favor of a staff report.
