Preparing for the entrance exams which will determine their future is the major preoccupation of Japanese students, a group of 30 Stelly’s and Parkland students learned during an exchange trip to Japan from Dec. 26 to Jan. 17. “They go to cram school,” said - Mari Ann Nissinen, a 17-year-old grade 12 student at Stelly’s. Classes are large by Canadian standards. The Peninsula students found themselves in classes of 43 to 48 students while attending Ritsumeikan Junior-Senior High School in Kyoto, Japan. The school, which enrolls 2,000 students, is a ‘sister-school’ to Parkland and Stelly’s. The Japanese and Canadian schools host exchanges with each other every year. Peninsula students participating in the exchange are usually Japan- ese language students from Park- land and Stelly’s. They stay with host families and attend classes at the host school. “People in my class were really > nice to me,” Mari Ann said. She found the Japanese teachers tended to give lectures to the class and there was less interaction between teachers and students. But she found the students very skilled in some area.
