News Peninsula reminds new minister of home He can almost imagine himself back in Ireland. The green rolling hills of the Saanich Peninsula, some dotted with sheep, are an echo of the landscape Noel Kinnon knew growing up in Ireland. History and religion are inter- twined in Ireland. Kinnon’s home town of Bangor was established in 524 A.D. As for the ongoing religious strife, Kinnon notes it is a complex situation with a long history and no easy solution. Oniginally Kinnon trained in England and Wales with British Telecom, then worked for the util- ity in Ireland and Wales. In 1976 he came to Canada, accepting a job with Bell Tele- phone in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. After a year with the telephone company, he began attending Knox College at the University of Tor- onto to train for the ministry. “I’ve moved from one branch of communication to another,” he said. “I was over 20 years in the telephone business but I always felt called-to serving the church.” Ordained in June 1980, his first posting was to Riverside Presby- terian Church in Medicine Hat, Alberta. In 1989 he was transferred to a REV. NOEL KINNON very different setting, the urban Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Vancouver. When he learned the Saanich Peninsula posting was available, he indicated his interest. “T’ve always liked working with smaller congregations, extending the congregation.” The church, which completed a new sanctuary last year on East Saanich Road, now has 99 mem- bers and 45 to 50 adherents. Previous pastor Rev. Peter Coutts has gone to Ontario to serve as an assistant minister, Kinnon said. 25-cent concerts at Parkland Come Valentine’s Day, Parkland School’s halls will be alive with the sound of music. A total of three groups will display their musical talents — all competing in The Battle of the Bands. Inspired and organized by Stu- dent Council arts director Nicole Staebell, the event will run during lunchtimes on Feb. 13-14. One of the competing bands consists of students nght from the school itself, while the other two are imported talent from Victoria. mSays Staebell of the guest group, Contempt, “They're a new, up and coming band.” The trenches for the Battle of the Bands will be the multi- purpose room at Parkland where students will have the opportunity to watch for a small fee of 25 cents. The winning group will be announced Monday, February 17th, and will receive gift certifi- cates for Lyle’s Records and Tapes. As a follow-up to last fall’s Strathcona trip, Parkland’s grad class will be launching off again in March — this time to conquer the ocean. FE Religion ofthe Light and Sound of God — WORSHIP SERVICE | Sunday, Feb. 9, 1992, 10 a.m. Sidney Hoiel Meeting Room 2537 Beacon Ave. Sidney, B.C.. ae ee ee ee The trip involves a four-day adventure on a huge sailing vessel that holds 30 students. The students will learn the fun- damentals of sailing, including mast climbing and rigging. At $64 per day, the grand total cost to grads comes to $256 — not a bad price when considering the personal growth that can come of such an opportunity. In other grad news, the next fundraising event is drawing near. The grad fashion show, an annual event, is planned for March 5 and will feature athletic, casual, and formal wear. Completely organized by stu- dents, the show has live entertain- ment, a concession and door prizes. Tickets are $7for adults and $6 for children under 12 and seniors. They will be available late in February. Ten per cent of proceeds from the show will be forwarded to the Help Fill A Dream Foundation which was responsible for helping Jayson Lenaghan, a student from Parkland that died“last March of leukemia. @Sands Funeral Chapels 656-2932 or 388-5155 Offer a complete choice of Professional Service. —TRADITIONAL —MEMORIAL —DIRECT CREMATION —FULL PRE-ARRANGEMENTS SERVICES Services from your church or in either of our chapels at 1803 QUADRA STREET VICTORIA Or 317 GOLDSTREAM AVE. COLWOOD He was inducted as the new minister in a service Jan. 28. “1 look at the ministry as being a very shared experience in the work we do,” he explained. “I’m hoping to see growth, not only in numbers but also in work and witness of the people.” He says the church is very relevant to individual lives, which he feels are strengthened and changed by belief. : Those involved in the church have a strong sense of commit- ment from which they reach out to serve the community, Kinnon said. He enjoys the combined urban and rural nature of his charge. “Its a nice mix.” At present he and his wife Edna are living in Brentwood and seek- ing a home in either Sidney or North Saanich. However they have family mem- bers nearby. Kinnon’s mother and uncle, Clara Kinnon and Sam Shaw, have lived in Sidney since 1989. Kannon’s daughter, Linda, and son-in-law Yvon live in Victoria with their two children, Kristin and Danielle. Son Jan lives just across the water in North Vancouver.
