The Saanich Indian School Board will control funds for edu- cating native children by next September, replacing the present distribution of funds by the provin- cial government. At the Jan. 13 school board meeting, District 63 trustees Peter Garnham and David Christian reported on a Jan. 9 meeting between the school district and the Saanich Indian school board to establish a framework for handling the change in financing. At present, the federal govern- ment allocates funds for native education to the provincial govern- ment, which distributes the money to local school boards, Christian explained. Before next September, he pre- dicted the funds will be transferred directly from the federal govern- ment to the native school board. The basic funding for native students attending public schools will be allocated to District 63 by the Saanich Indian School Board, based on the number of native students enrolled in public school as of Sept. 30. “So if they are unhappy with any District 63 program, they are Company fined for fax evasion Waters Edge Village Real Estates Ltd., developer of a town- house complex in Saanichton, was fined $20,756.22 in Victoria pro- vincial court Thursday for tax evasion. Special programs for native stu- dents will still be funded by the ~ provincial government, Christian added. Trustees also agreed there should be no charge for use of the district’s media centre by Lau,welnew Tribal School for the remainder of the school year. To date, the media centre has provided materials to the tribal school without charge. However use by the tribal school has increased from 46 requests in 1987 to. an estimated 75 requests over the 1991-92 school year. Trustee Derek Chow said the district should maintain a “good neighbor policy” but also had to consider the costs involved. Christian said use of the céntre ‘could be included in the local -education agreement to be drafted by Baker and Stefaniak.
