News TheReview Wednesday, January 22,1992 — A13 First step — decide what is your heritage There’s money available to fund heritage-related projects, but first local residents should figure out what their heritage is. That was the message Kathleen ONeill, a heritage programs offi- cer with Heritage Trust, brought to a Thursday meeting of the Sidney and North Saanich Historical Society. “What your heritage resources are 1s something you have to identify and define,” she said. She said many communities which are moving forward in pre- serving their heritage have devel- oped a community theme to show- case. mo2zp—-ruvuvusp SALE PRICED FROM ONLY At this stage in Sidney and North Saanich, she said resources should be defined and decisions made on what to preserve and promote. “Then decide what it is you're going to do,” picking specific projects to toil away at, she told about 20 society members. That’s when Heritage Trust can play a role. O’Neill said funding is available for heritage projects from Hentage Trust, a Crown corporation which adjudicates grant applications. There are a number of Trust programs to apply under, from underwater archaeology to exterior renovations of heritage-designated public properties, but O’Neill encouraged the society to pick a manageable project like a historic walking tour or oral history project as an initial venture. Sidney’s heritage advisory com- mittee is expected to approach the Trust for a grant to assist in publishing a walking/bicycling/ driving tour brochure of the town. It’s a small, workable project “that would help us get started on this long process of defining what heritage is,” said committee chair- man Cyril Hume. “24 HOUR SERVICE 7 DAYS A WEEK Call my Uncle at MAXWELL’S TOWING 659-4442 and you and your car will get home Safely, for only $30.00 plus GST. anywhere on the Peninsula or Victoria.
