Community Editor: Valorie Lennox 656-1151 TheReview Wednesday, January 15,1992 — All Wired for roc by Valorie Lennox The Review All wired up and ready to rock _| — that’s one-man band McRorie Tait. McRorie, who performs at the Golden Bear in Sidney this Wed- nesday to Saturday, is his own five-man rock band and lead vocalist. Modern electronics, practice and the voitar — a device he invented to replicate the sounds of an electric guitar with his voice — combine to create the illusion of a complete band. He also operates the lights and fog machine for his show. The 35-year-old Vancouver resi- dent played in conventional four and five-man bands after a child- hood stint as a performer in a family quartet called the Taitums. Able to play the accordion at six and the drums at eight, he experi- mented with various forms of rock and roll, reggae and was working on a two-man band with cellist- guitarist Corby Keep in 1985 when a car accident sidelined his partner. At that point, McRorie decided to become a one-man band. When he performs, he plays thythm ‘guitar’ using a keyboard hanging on one hip and bass riffs using a keyboard hanging on the other hip. Sensors on his toes and heels produce the sounds of bass drum, snare drum and cymbal. His feet also tap sensors to control the light show which accompanies his per- formance. ‘On stage, he must perform the equivalent of simulfaneous fap dancing, singing and juggling — while wearing 25 pounds of electronic equipment’ Four electronic drum pads strapped to his chest produce a further range of drum sounds. To produce the sounds of a lead guitar, he created the voitar, which allows him to sing the lead guitar notes into a channel of his micro- phone. Computerized distortion changes the notes into the sound of a lead guitar. To reproduce the range of a lead guitar using the voitar, McRorie WIRED FOR SOUND, one- man band McRorie Tait performs at the Golden Bear in Sidney tonight to Saturday. trained himself to sing over a four-octave range. He also sings the words. McRorie performs his own music — and the music of many others, including ZZ Top, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Rolling Stones, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Bruce Spring- steen, Black Sabbath, Steppen- wolf, Van Halen and Led Zep- pelin. His early training as a drummer, which taught him to play four rhythms at one time, gave him the basic control to be able to play four instruments at one time. Tap dancing lessons gave him the precise control over his feet. He describes the technique as co-ordinated independence. But to maintain it takes hours of daily practice as he must learn all the parts for each song — then learn to play them simultaneously. He works out to stay in shape for the grueling performances. On stage, he must perform the equiva- lent of simultaneous tap dancing, singing and juggling — while wearing 25 pounds of electronic equipment. Although some one-man perfor- mers use pre-recorded music to produce their shows, McRorie pro- k — one-man band blasting the Bear duces every note live. The structure of rock music — the vocals fade out when the lead guitar is featured and drum solos are not overlaid onto keyboard — allows him to accurately reproduce both the music and vocals. Reviewers of his shows consis- tently marvel that one man can produce the range of sound heard in- McRorie’s performances. He can blast any venue — backed up by a state of the art sound system, strobe, scanners, lights, fog machine, fifty par 64 one thousands and 35 par 56 A.CL.’S and effects. He estimates his total invest- ment in equipment at $100,000. But there’s no danger of his band splitting up. | Jan. 14-20/92 Sidney / Prices Effective We Reserve the Right to Limit \ Quantities SHOP & SAVE 7 DAYS A WEEK AT SIDNEY SUPER FOODS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY TILL 9:00 PM.
