Resolve to give Save lives this year with a simple resolution — decide to” give blood. For Peninsula residents, the res- olution can start with a visit to the blood donor clinic next Wednes- day from 2 to 8 p.m. at Sidney Elementary School, 1181 Henry Avenue, Sidney. The clinic is sponsored by the Sidney Rotary Club. “The Red Cross blood bank operates for the benefit of all Canadians but they can only succeed in saving lives if all Canadians who are eligible recog- nize their responsibility to become blood donors and act upon it,” said Gail Richards, program con- sultant for Blood Donor recruit- ment on Vancouver Island. Richards notes people often start the new year with resolutions to quit smoking, lose weight, change careers or spend more time with their families. ““There’s one resolution that should be added to the list because it costs you nothing yet means everything to someone in hospi- tal,” Richards says. “This year resolve to become a regular blood donor.” New waadieal : treatments and surgical techniques are increasing the demand for blood. This year, the Red Cross will need 15,000 more donors in B.C just to meet the demand. Anyone who is in good health, between 17 and 71 and weighs more than 100 pounds can be a blood donor. First-time donors must be under age 60. Donors should be free of medi- cation, except for birth control pulls and vitamins. The average person has 10 to 12 pints of blood in their body. The single pint taken during the aver- age 20-minute donation process is quickly replaced with no ill effects, Richards explained. Richards suggests donors should have a substantial meal before attending the clinic and should allow about an hour for the entire process. Donors should also bring identi- fication, such as a Red Cross blood donor card, a driver’s license or a birth certificate.
