_ Sports TheReview Wednesday, January 15,1992 — A19 DePol takes second | in Pioneer Run by Girard Hengen The Review The way Chad DePol had it figured, he would race against the clock, not his opponents, in the Central Saanich Pioneer 8K Run Sunday. The 19-year-old Peninsula Track Club runner planned to meet personal goals rather than be con- cemed with where he finished in the pack. “All I had intended was just to have a good time,” said DePol. Then, near the latter stages of the race, he spied the top three runners leading the field. “T thought I could catch them. I said I might as well just see if I can get them.” DePol kicked into high gear, storming past two of the three down the final stretch on West Saanich Road. But he could not pass Paddy McCluskey, a UVic Vikes runner who won the race in 24 minutes, 37 seconds. DePol was next at 24:53. “It is my personal best. I’m pleased with that,” he said. A number of Peninsula Club runners placed at or near the top of their age groups. The club has been augmented by international caliber athletes this season, including Angela Chal- mers, Cheryl Murphy and Lisa MacBeth, who placed second to fourth overall for women. Sarah Thornber was fifth overall and easily won the women’s 13-19 category in 29:01. Rhonda Robinson placed seventh overall, and won the wom- en’s 30-34 class in 29:11. Meanwhile, running in the men’s 20-29 class, DePol was second (to McCluskey). Mike Creery, one of the Penin- sula club coaches, won the men’s 45-49 class with a time of 26:24. In the 13-19 class, Mark Hol- loway was fifth (28:45), Scott Travelbea was ninth (29:10), Ryan McGimpsey placed 13th (32:23) and Kyle McGimpsey was 17th (32:54). — The race, the first in the Thrifty Foods Island Race Series, attracted a record 760 runners, said race director Ron Cole. ~ Cole thanked the series sponsor and the many local volunteers from the communities of Central Saanich for their co-operation in staging the race. The route followed Wallace Drive to Saanichton, veered down East Saanich Road and Wallace, over onto Stelly’s Crossroad and down West Saanich to the finish. ‘“All in all, it’s hats off to the people of the Saanich Peninsula for making the Central Saanich Pioneer Race one of the most successful road races on Vancouv- er Island.” Central Saanich police report no incidents and said everything came off smoothly. Goicha HtO spliis games The first-place Gotcha HtO senior men’s volleyball squad split its games against rivals last week.
