(> ‘| ! +Sports Popular Pioneer Run set for Sunday _ The Prairie Inn Harriers Run- ning Club will be hosting the 7th Annual Central Saanich Pioneer - 8K Run on Sunday: The event is the first of eight events which comprise the Thrifty Foods Island Race Series, and is expected to attract close to 700 runners from the Vancouver Island area. The Pioneer 8K Run has proven to be the most popular of all the series events, said race director Ron Cole. “Our run stresses fun and par- ticipation and we have awards to 6th place in each of 18 age-group . categones for men and women,” said Cole. Bantams miss out on medals The Peninsula Sidney Pharma- save Bantam Rep Eagles hockey team narrowly missed out on the medals at a recent tournament. The team played in the Parks- ville Christmas tournament, and finished in a three-way tie for second place with a record of two wins and two losses. However, because of a more unfavorable goals for and against ratio, the team was out of the medal hunt. The team’s most valuable play- ers in each game were Craig Pelton, Ben Thornber, Mike Kaercher and Gary Swanson. Other players who turned in strong performances were captain Steve Postings and center Jason Milani. The two losses were against Abbotsford and Racquet Club, while the wins came at the ge cxpense of North Island and a team from Portland, Ore. Runners can register between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on race day at the Brentwood Hall on Wallace Drive just west of — West Saanich Road. The entry fee is $13 and includes a variety of baking and fruits supplied by the Series major sponsor, Thrifty Foods. There is also a wide assortment of draw prizes supplied by local sponsors. Race favorites include Saani- chton’s Tom Michell who has just completed an exceptional year of running. Michell, who set a PR. in the British Columbia Cross Country Championships at the University of Victoria, holds the course record for the men’s 30-34 age group. Chad DePol, one of Canada’s up and coming junior runners and a Peninsula resident, has also fin- ished an impressive year and is expected to repeat as a category winner. In the masters category the com- petition is fierce with Prairie Inn Harrier runners Bob Reid and Mike Creesy. Sidney’s Sarah Thornber, an impressive young talent who becomes stronger with each race, should win her age category. Local runners from Team West Coast, the Flying Y, Vipers Racing Team and the Harriers are expect- ed to capture most of the top positions. Road travel will be restricted between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m..in the Brentwood and Saani- _ chton area and motorists are asked to follow the directions of the 30 route marshals and Central Saa- nich police, who will be at strate- gic intersections along the course.
