Tour to China has openings for March departure

A group of area high school
students are preparing for a trip to
mysterious China this spring.

And there’s sull room for a few
more to jon them.

Parkland teacher Joe Milligan is
one of the organizers, the second
time he has taken students to the
Far East.

He went with students in 1988,
but this time the entourage will
travel wider afield, exploring far
into the country’s interior.

Up to 30 spaces were available
for Grade 10 to 12 students at the
three Saanich school district high
schools, and a handful are still
remaining, says Milligan.

The students depart over spring
break, from March 13-29. The cost
is $2,400.

The trip begins in the govern-
ment centre of Beijing, “a very
austere place,” said Milligan.

Over three days will be spent in
Beijing, including a tour of Tian-
anmen Square, site of a student
protest in 1989 that was brutally
crushed by government armed
forces.

Also on the agenda is a visit to
the famous Forbidden City and
Summer Palace, a walk on the
incredible Great Wall, a tour of the
ancient Ming Tombs, a visit to a
middle school, and, of course, a
roast Peking duck dinner.

From Beijing it’s off to Kunm-
ing far in the tropical southwest.

It’s an old city with many his-
toric sites, says Milligan, including
the renowned stone forest.

“We're going to see some of the
agrarian lifestyle,” he said.

After about three days, the group
then heads to Guilin, “one of the
most beautiful places in China”
almost due east of Kunming in the
interior, says Milligan.

Tours will include Fubo Hill, the
Seven Star Cave and a riverboat
cruise. Many artists and painters
have captured the limestone hills
of the region.

After a couple of days in Shang-
hai, the travellers head to Suzhou,
Victoria’s sister city, for a Grand
Canal boat ride, visits to a silk
spinning factory and the Humble
Administrator’s Garden, and an
evening of cultural performances.

After touring another middle
school, the group joumeys back to
Shanghai for the final two days
before coming home.

The trip gives students an
opportunity to see and experience
a part of the Pacific Rim, plus a
chance to meet others their age
who are more than interested in
them.

“They re eager to learn about
the west and eager to learn Eng-
lish,” said Milligan.
